Quote:

In the 10 years from 2009 to 2018, pit bulls killed or maimed 3,569 people in the USA and Canada. (Merritt Clifton, Dog Attack Deaths & Maimings, U.S. & Canada, 1982-2018 Log.) They killed over 80% of all Americans who are killed by dogs. (Colleen Lynn, 2015 U.S. Dog Bite Fatalities, at http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2015.php.)

I can't imagine owning a pit bull at all but owning one with children is so irresponsible. The damage any dog can inflict in a couple of seconds is often life changing (scars) if not death. It's just irresponsible. My oldest son was attacked by a family members' pit mix when he was 7. It happened in millisecond. He had a nasty, raised scar on his cheek from the lip to the eye. I personally euthanized the dog. He had to have three surgeries to fix the scar, the last one when he was a teenager.

Sorry that happened to your son. Glad they were able to address the issue with surgery.

I have a pitbull and if any of you have a problem with it, we'll put our dogs in the cage, fight 'til the death, winner takes all.
Don't have a dog but how about we get into a ring and the dog can bring what it has which are teeth and I can bring what I have which are opposable thumbs that can fire my 357 with hollow points.

and pitbull owners.

Why punish responsible pet owners for the criminal actions of others? How about if we ACTUALLY hold people responsible for their actions? Your dog kills someone -> You go on trial for murder. That would solve the problem one way or the other and allow responsible pet owners that follow the law to keep doing what they do.

Same thing with guns. Allow everyone the freedom to carry until they give you a reason not to.

Who will you punish in the story quoted above where the couple's own pits killed their two kids and nearly killed the wife?

Retribution for the wrong done is no answer when the animals are clearly uncontrollable and unpredictable. The damage is already done. What kind of retribution makes a victim whole if they are mauled?

Why not let people own a gorilla in a neighborhood and just punish them if it gets loose? Or a rhino? A lion? Point being, society puts reasonable limits on what kind of animals you can legally own in residential areas, based on predictable dangers to others. This is no different.

Adults get punished for making adult decisions. If your pitbull kills your kids, you face two charges or murder. Don't like it? Replace your pitbull with a Chihuahua.

As far as restitution, I'd require criminals to make the victims whole, no matter what. If your Gorilla rips the victim's arm off, you have to be the victim's arm for the rest of your life or negotiate a settlement with the victim. Your house, car, and retirement accounts are no longer immune from judgement. Don't like it? Replace your gorilla with a gold fish.

We wouldn't need a majority of the laws on the books if people were ACTUALLY held accountable for their actions.

I am good friends with the firefighter in the middle. He told me all about it at church Sunday.

Every sane person agrees that there are limits as to which animals are allowed to live in residential areas. The only argument is where the line is drawn. I draw it on the side that disallows pit bulls.

If your pit bull kills my kid, I guess restitution says you get to "be my kid" from that point forward, according to your logic. Yeah, no thanks.

Not to wade in to the greater argument here, but chosen ones dog is cool AF.

My wife grew up with pits and really wants one for our next dog, but I have always said no way. It will never happen! With that said, we currently have a doberman and she's a sweetheart!

Went to the local animal shelter yesterday and 90% of the dogs they had were bully breeds. Pretty sad.

I'd say go for it. You're clearly okay with owning a dog that can kill a family member already.

They should all be euthanized.

And most of the others were probably chihuahuas or "lab mixes" that look suspiciously like pit bulls.

No I counted everything bully in the 90% there were a couple German Shephard looking dogs, a couple pure mutts of some sort without block heads and a couple daschund mixes. Everything else had a block head.

Eta 1 or 2 actual lab mix types and one that looked like a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.

We went to the LC municipal facility. It is REALLY nice. Looking for a cat for our property though, and they have a barn cat program we will utilize.
