I was working in offshore O&G and had been assigned to a new rig warehouse project in Houston in the Greenspoint area. I was wrapping up work in the warehouse Friday afternoon when a call comes in from the main office and they tell me they've booked a flight for me to hand carry two 50# valves to a down Rig off the coast of Mauritania. I have to go a couple blocks away to a subcontractor's warehouse, pick up the valves, haul ass home, pack a carry on bag, buy a couple of cheap duffel bags to carry the valves in, and make a flight to leaving to Istanbul in 4 hours. They email me my ticket and an expedited VISA and off I go. Land in Turkey, sleep through a 5 hour layover then catch a flight to Morocco and then to Nouakchott. I'm to haul these valves with me as checked baggage.

The company emails me an agent I am to call and meet when I land that will walk me through customs there. They mostly only speak Arabic and French, and there's a lot of police security guys toting AK's around the airport. I meet the agent, and we drop the valves and paperwork off at customs and then they get me in a blacked out SUV with the driver who drives me across town and books me into a decent hotel with a LOT of security guards, where I lay low on a 5th floor room for 48 hours until the next available outbound flight. Turns out there was an active Al Qaeda affiliate cell in the area. I politely turned down the driver's offer to take a tour around if I wanted or drive to the French Embassy (only place where alcohol was allowed and available to buy), and spent 2 days reading in my room or watching BBC world, their only English language tV channel, listening to car horns honking in every direction near and far from down to dusk except during call to prayer, and eating at the hotel restaurant, until the agent called and had me meet the driver back in the lobby to catch an outbound flight. I really stood out in the place as not from around there, to be sure.

I get to the airport and get grouped in with some company Filipino rig crewmen rotating home and we get shuffled back through customs. They checked the hell out of our bags several times, and also grilled us about turning over any national currency we might have. They forbid their currency to be taken outside of their border so if you obtained any, you had to give it up. They did not exchange either, but I had none. The guy in the security booth must have been allowed to keep whatever was taken because he gave a frustrated look when I said I had none. He was big and armed so I sure the hell wasn't lying.

They check out bags again at the flight line and we wait about an hour (it is midnight) while they meticulously inspect the Air France plane for anything that "doesn't belong" on the underside and landing gear.

Finally, I get flown back to Paris, then home.

4 days of WTF?

I have gone to Herndon and Reston Virginia, but not made directly into DC.

Only been to Amsterdam and Bangkok, but many times and well worth it!

That's a pretty incredible story. Thanks for sharing. Any photos from Mauritania you can share? Did you at least get some sort of hazard pay for that? Business class seats?

Some of the security stuff reminds me of flying out of Morocco. Every bag was inspected and its owner had to identify it specifically.
