I guess the only person I actually knew filed a fraudulent medical claim with his company and was immediately caught and fired and spent a short time in county jail over it because it was over several thousand $.

Went to HS with the female accomplice in this case. She was a year behind me. We were in band together.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Jennifer_Cave

Also a guy from my squad in the army killed a woman for money and got arrested after a few months on the run.

Another guy from my unit was convicted of armed robbery after knocking off several banks after he got out in California.

And my old supply sergeant from my last active duty unit for being a pedo. Dude always seemed off but we just thought he was one of those "inside kids" who liked anime, magic the gathering and D&D.

Wife's ex started a Ponzi scheme and ran it for about 2 years. His 'pitch' to investors was: he had a legit business driving drunk people and their cars to their homes. But the BS was that he said for every dollar he raised from friends and family, the big three beer companies would match him dollar for dollar. He took hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars from friends, business owners, family. He took his brother for $67k who cleared out his kids' college accounts to invest with his big brother. He took his parents for over $100k and they had to move to a trailer park.

FBI interviewed a bunch of us, they just couldn't get enough evidence for a slam dunk prosecution. They had bigger fish to fry.

Went to high school and played youth baseball with a guy who at 16, one day he walked next door to his elderly neighbor's house, strangled her to death, and robbed her of $75 whole dollars. Life in prison.

Went to high school with a guy who murdered 3 people over a $1000 insurance check. Perp found out through word of mouth that the victim had just received $1000 so he got a crew together and went to the victim's house. There were two other teens there, wrong place, wrong time. All 3 were shot to death. Perp got to death penalty, but I think was taken off of death row for some reason.

My father.

He murdered my mother when I was very young.

Shot her repeatedly in the chest and neck. The worst part is that she had enough time to call 911 and beg for her life before she died.

One of my mom's cousins used a shotgun to blow a guy out of the back of a van going down the freeway about 35 years ago and is doing life. Never met him, but my mom used to hang out with him when they were younger. Her aunt, who recently passed, would go up every week to see him. He'll probably never have another visitor the rest of his life.

Oh…for those in Houston, you may remember this past spring about a woman being found by her ex husband in her garage with a GSW when he was dropping their kids off. I grew up with and graduated HS with both her and the guy that killed her...small town with a lot of kids going K-12 together.

The guy that killed her has done several stints in prison for things like robbery and will now die in prison. He was always trouble in school as well, so the previous things didn't surprise me. The fact he could kill her did.

My Dad used to run the commissary at the McLennan County jail back in the 1980s selling Cigs, snacks etc. to the prisoners. I would go along quite a bit to help him. Sold stuff to Henry Lee Lucas, Kenneth McDuff and all the Lake Waco murder guys, David Wayne Spence, Gilbert and Anthony Melendez and Munir Mohammed Deeb. It was weird looking back on it.

I grew up in Coryell County in the 80's and 90's. Really makes you think...

Forgot about this one until someone mentioned a similar crime above.

This guy ran his own investing business. Turned it into a Ponzi scheme. Got busted.

In the meantime, runs a red light and causes a crash that kills a woman. Think he was on some pills that were not his and had a firearm he should not have had in his truck.

His family was just outstanding. Older brother was and is one of the highest achievers I've ever met. Seriously had a Midas touch. Everything he does turns out incredibly well and he is the nicest and most humble guy you could meet. And a damned good Aggie.

His younger sister is bright and incredibly sweet and just lovely. Gorgeous woman even to this day but seems to not know it.

What happened to Mark, I don't know. He was in the Navy and I kinda lost touch with whatever he was doing after that until he made the news.

He's now facing 25 to 99 years for cutting his brother with a knife, and his prosecutor specializes in domestic violence cases and is pretty harsh, so he's getting at least 25 years. He's 61 and is an alcoholic and drug addict, so he has a high chance of dying in prison. This will be his ninth felony conviction (to be fair, one of them is for trying to hide a crack pipe and another is for his second evading arrest conviction, but the rest are more serious), and he has fifteen misdemeanor convictions (seven are for trespassing or theft and two are for misdemeanor assault). He's also had three probations revoked (he didn't get probation for any of his violent felony convictions, but he got it for forgery, misdemeanor assault and his first evading arrest conviction).

He's a Barbee girl in a Barbee world. If Texas had the electric chair, he could say to put another shrimp on the Barbee as his last words, since he would have been cooked.

Was pretty good friends with a guy in high school who got into drugs and went off the deep end. He shot a guy in the face while he was taking out the trash because he thought he was having an affair with his wife. (He wasn't) He's lucky he survived and isn't facing murder charges.

Also went to high school with a girl who was murdered in front of her young son by another girl who set some dude on fire at school years earlier.

Guy I worked with in the early 80's us in Levenworth for life. Drove the getaway car in an armed bank robbery. He was an ex cop and knew bank procedures and one of the robbers, his brother, accidentially shot the other robber and killed him. They made an example of the driver because he was an ex cop.

That reminds me of another guy I know. Knew him really well as he lived around the corner from me when we were growing up.

He also went to Leavenworth. Had a drug problem while in the Air Force. Might have been dealing as well.

The OSI or whatever the internal agency is that investigates stuff was tailing him and some buddies for awhile. Including when they had leave and were traveling to other cities. Knew everything he was doing, where he stayed, what clubs he went to, which women he took him from clubs and screwed and which room in their homes they were in when they had the sex.

Blew his mind they knew that much but they wanted a rock solid case and wanted to see how many other enlisted men were involved.

He's a solid dude other than that! He is a dead ring for Mike Judge.

Actually, one of them did 5 years in Club Fed for this. Was a complete shock. Never had a clue until I was in court that day when he was convicted and sentenced.

ETA: I've had very limited interaction with him since then. He's done his time and seems to have gotten his life together since then.

Wow. That's a lot of bad.

What immediately came to mind was a guy I knew from childhood that I went to the local Baptist Church with. Dude - call him 'DM' - had a personality that was outgoing, but was also cocky and occasionally exhibited a mean streak. We were debate partners briefly in high school until on the way back from a tournament we stopped at the mall in Waco to eat at Luby's. When we got back to the school van he pulled an album - some Christian group - out of his jacket. He had lifted it in the Christian book store in the mall. We weren't debate partners after that - something had told me he was off, but that confirmed it.
Several years later I was visiting with another mutual friend and he mentioned something about DM getting in trouble. I asked him what he was talking about and he informed me that shortly after we graduated from high school, DM had formed a theft ring that was regularly ripping off stores in the malls in Dallas. They got caught stealing jewelry from a store in Red Bird mall of all places. His cohorts got the book thrown at them but DM mysteriously got Deferred Adjudication and his record scrubbed when he turned 18 a few months later. I'm guessing he worked a deal to flip the others. Consequently he didn't lose his scholarship to Baylor. He ended up marrying my girlfriend at the time, graduated from Baylor and went to work for Pfizer. So I guess you could say he became a drug dealer. I'm guessing he learned from the incident. I just don't know if he learned his lesson or if he learned how to not get caught.
