10. The cop that helped out McLane represents Santa Claus because he's fat like him.

Die Hard Screenwriter Steven E. De Souza himself has said it's a Christmas movie

It is absolutely a Christmas movie.

Father tries to win back his estranged wife and get home for Christmas with the setting of a Christmas party, Christmas music and props throughout. It just takes him killing about 12 people to do so.

if Die Hard and Wonderful Life are not Christmas movies - I'll need to see the metrics used to determine what is a Christmas movie

"Miracle on 34th Street" release date: June 4th

I'm guessing you'll file this title under courtroom drama?

If you do not consider the greatest Christmas movie of all time a Christmas movie,

Then what are your personal defining metrics for a movie to be viewed as a Christmas movie?
The movie should not be able to stand on its own without Christmas. It needs to be an essential part of the plot rather than just when the movie is taking place. Die Hard could easily have happened on New Years Eve (and in fact, for the reasons mentioned above such as the office party and the football game would make WAY more sense.)

Furthermore, the intent of the filmmaker goes a long way here, with things like release date being Nov-Dec, holiday soundtrack, dressing and decorations seen in each scene, etc.

As an example, let's take Home Alone, which is commonly brought up as counter to this argument.

No, this movie would not work if it was just the family leaving on any old trip. It needed to be Christmas for him to realize that Christmas is about being with your family rather than just getting gifts. And seeing the old man reunite with his family at the end is probably the emotional high point of the entire movie.

Nevermind the fact that every single frame of that movie has red and green blasted everywhere, a decision very much intended by the director, as well as the fantastic Christmas soundtrack and the scene in the church.

Could you take Christmas out and still have a passable movie? Sure, but it loses all its magic, and it is nowhere near the classic it is considered today.

Put Die Hard on New Years? Literally the exact same movie, and it's still a beloved action movie classic.

To further support my point, I like watching Eyes Wide Shut around the holidays. There's tons of Christmas decor throughout the movie, and I like seeing NYC in the winter.

But I doubt anyone here would campaign for that to be considered a Christmas movie.

The first one feels kinda Christmas-y to me, although it's not a Christmas movie. (John Williams' Home Alone-y score is a big reason why.)

Edward Scissorhands is one I like to watch. The score and the final scenes taking place at Christmas make it a nice holiday watch. But probably wouldn't count this one either.

Now I really want to see Jack Nicholson embodying Col Jessup from a Few Good Men as Santa Claus defending his existence. Ironically JT Walsh, who was in A Few Good Men, is the prosecutor in the 1994 Miracle on 34th Street as well.

Prosecutor Ed Collins: "Mr. Kringle! Are you in fact SANTA CLAUS!"

Judge: You don't have to answer that question!

Santa: I'll answer the question. You want answers?

Prosecutor: I think I'm entitled to them.

Santa: You want answers?!

Prosecutor: I want the truth!

Santa: You can't handle the truth!

Son, we live in a world that has chimneys, and those chimneys have to be accessed by men with sleighs. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Tooth Fairy? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Hermie, and you curse my Elves. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know -- that Hermie's death, while tragic, probably increased toy production; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, brings joy to the world.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at Christmas parties, you want me in that chimney -- you need me in that chimney.
We use words like "Dasher", and "Dancer, "Prancer and Vixen." We use these words as the backbone of a life spent seeing you when you're sleeping and knowing when you're awake. You use them as a Christmas carol.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who once wrote me a letter asking for a Malibu Barbie Corvette and then questions the manner in which I provided it.

I would rather that you just said "Ho, Ho, Ho" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you get your ass to my workshop and start building hoverboards. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think you're entitled to!

Christmas is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus through a variety of traditions. I believe it was TBS which began this tradition of airing Die Hard every year and I feel it is a good tradition: gathering around the tube with family watching things splode to fill the time between opening gifts, christmas dinner, Church services, etc.

Furthermore, while the plot of Die Hard can take place during any holiday and still work the reality is that it does take place on Christmas Eve and it is littered with festive swag all over the damn place. Could Rambo 3 take place on christmas? Maybe, but we know die hard does. Tough snickerdoodle cookies. Get over it.

False equivalence. It's not the sole deciding factor.
However you still decided to present it as part of your argument why Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. Seems to me it weakens your argument not bolster it.

It's Beethoven Christmas music, In other words if Charlie Brown can use "Fur Elise" and jazz, then Die Hard can use "Ode to Joy," or are you also going to make the argument that that A Charlie Brown Christmas really isn't a Christmas Special either?

If other films that almost the entire world considers Christmas movies were not released during the Christmas season, why not Die Hard?

Because the vast majority of Holiday films DO release in Nov-Dec. It's a supporting argument, not my only argument.
