Why do people hate jury duty so much?

The Wife got tabbed and picked today, and was pissed off. It's the price (a small one) you pay for living in the greatest country our world has ever known. It should be an honor to serve.

EDIT: The Wife and I both got notifications for the same day, originally, but I got shoved back until Halloween. That sucks only because I usually like to cook for the neighborhood "party", and if I'm tabbed I'll be too late.

We are all so busy with 100s of todos. When something like this comes up, it throws a spanner in the works and throws all our planning off course.
That is my reason at least. If I was a bum with nothing much going on then I wouldn't be annoyed.

People are generally lazy and addicted to their phones. They can't stand the thought of not looking at a screen for a few hours.

I would really like to get called and actually sit on a jury for a decently serious case. The problem with that is I travel 6 months a year so it isn't really practical. If I ever get called while I am home I will go.

I completely agree with you. I have been on 3 different Jury's and the most inconvenient one was when I was in my 30's and had two small children it was a Federal jury in Houston (I lived here in Brazos co many people don't know as I did not this county is in the federal jury pool for Harris co) it lasted four days and we rendered a unanimous verdict. It was my duty and thankful I could serve even though it was tough on my young family

I've been called maybe 6-7 times but never selected to serve on the jury. The last one was several years ago. It was the murder trial for Baby Grace's mom. Luckily I was on the 2nd call and was dismissed as the 1st call filled the jury. Was not wanting to see photos of what the parents did to that poor little girl.

It's because of work. If my work didn't build up while I was serving jury duty, I wouldn't mind it. But now there's a full day's (or more) worth of work to make up when I get back.

If they would call the homeless for jury duty, our problems would be solved.

The homeless would realize they are in a much better position than many criminal defendants.

We could feed them while on jury duty and let them sleep in the heated or air conditioned courthouse and they would be off the streets.

Nobody with a real job would be bothered with jury duty and would inclined to be kinder to homeless people who would walk away from the trial with $40 per day.

No defendant could claim a biased jury based on class or race.

Defense attorneys could no longer profile juries based on middle class sensitivity.

We could hold over one jury to other trials, giving them real jobs.

I've been the last strike from a jury for a domestic abuse, sexual assault and mutilation case (dude allegedly bit her nose half off; why yes, meth was involved), and I served on a county grand jury for three months. Grand jury was fun; 1-2 days a month, though some of the cases got repetitive.

I LOVE it. I wish I had been a lawyer. I find the whole thing fascinating. I made the jury a few months ago and would love to do it again (depending on the case). I was on the grand jury and that was really neat. I learned just how many dumbasses we have in BCS.

Easy - open that letter and throw it away.

It's not sent certified mail and there's no way to prove you read it or were served. They'll find other people to get paid $4/day and get fked by their employer.

I love jury duty. It's one of the few times where I get to observe and interact with the general public vs the life I typically lead filled with highly educated or otherwise proven competent people. Kind of like going to the State Fair.

You haven't seen those underground Houston tunnels they parade everyone around in like cattle.

Or seen those big giant bags of junk those people bring with them to jury duty that holds the line up at the metal detectors.

Because the jury system in Brazos County is a joke. They gave me a range of dates. I picked one and managed all my business and personal affairs around it to carve out several days to serve on a jury, and then they canceled the night before I was supposed to report. Apparently happens frequently according to feedback from others.

So now I haven't received credit for serving, so I'll have go thru this exercise again in the next year or two because of their incompetence, not mine.

I've served on juries elsewhere and didn't have near this amount of cancellations. If you were called, you showed, got credit for it, and they didn't call you again for several years.

I get paid while at jury duty so I don't mind being called in. I have never been picked so that is the only reason it annoys me.

Have been called around a dozen times, got out of it each time except the last. I did not choose to show my rear i that particular judge's court since I knew him a little and admired him when he was an attorney. Nice guy, Vietnam vet, had health issues from his time in the service. Agent orange maybe?

I never wanted to serve because I always owned my own business, sometimes more than one, and it cost me a lot of money to get hung up on a jury. One judge told me it was my civic duty and my reply was that he didn't really want to get in a comparison of civic duty inasmuch as I never saw him, the DA, the assistant DA or either of the two attorneys for the defendant participating in any civic events, nor doing any volunteer work around our small town. Not one single time.

Around half the time I got dismissed prior to someone using a strike on me.

A lot of people like jury duty. For many, it is a paid day off (sometimes more than one day off) from work and they just sit and listen to the proceedings. Get a free lunch as well. For others, I think they really like looking in someone else's underwear drawer and being on the jury allows them to do so.

I've served on 2 juries - both for pretty serious criminal cases. I'll allow myself to get a little sanctimonious and say it is truly one of the most important things you can do to participate in society. It's super inconvenient for most - but I hate the negative attitude. I recognize also that my career allows me to participate in such things without risking my job or financial problem. Yes, our court system isn't very user friendly but it should be setup to protect the defendant at most all costs.

Anyway - stop being a little B and do your part if called on a jury

My only issue is the sheer incompetence with how they run things in many jurisdictions. This is something that they do everyday, it should be pretty easy to put some base procedures in to make it all easy. Then again, they also have to deal with the general public so they just make everyone's lives more difficult.

Overall, i don't have an issue with Jury duty, just an issue with the way I've been treated when I take the time to go.

My issue is with judging someone's guilt. What I view as right and just and what is legal are not always the same.

Because I get picked 1 to 2 times a year...I seemingly always have to show up (haven't received the prior night call that it's canceled in years)...the cases always seem somewhat important, not basic bull****, I do my civic duty, I answer questions objectively instead of use it as a platform to rant like others. I don't ask out/excuse out even when it is a real inconvenience...and I never get picked.

At least ****ing pick me to sit on one if you're going to make me show up multiple times a year.

If you get convicted get NPR to make a podcast about you, con the host into clearly falling in love with you throughout the course of the podcast and present the story in a one sided way, get a social justice DA to drop charges through a pr campaign, profit.

Most of the time the potential jurors all sit/stand in a hallway for an hour or two. At some point the Jury guy will come out and say "Ladies and gentlemen, thanks for being here this morning. Because you were here, the parties have agreed to settle. You can go home now"

Been to jury duty a few times - was actually picked to be on a jury the first time I went. It was a civil case involving a car accident. I really enjoyed going through the process, although the jury deliberations were a pain - lot of head strong people in the room.

The biggest surprise for me was how the lawyers behaved during the trial - which ended up being a little over two days. You would've thought we were on Law and Order or something. Just the way they tried to sensationalize everything to help their case. It was pretty entertaining.

Going back on November 1st for another go at it.

If you hate going to jury duty, jury duty during Covid would have been hell. I got called in March of 2021 of Bexar county jury duty, but I had to report in by video from home. If you got picked in a pool you had to show up the next day. I didn't get picked.

They divide you into rooms of about 40 people and to check if you are there they call out your name and you have to answer "here" after about 10 names are called some dumbass speaks up and asked "did you call my name" ? Then 3 or 4 more names are called and some other dumbass will ask "Did you call my name, I was in the bathroom." It is a total beat down. The people the work jury duty must hate themselves for having to deal with morons on a daily basis.

Jury Duty needs to be stopped. It's a waste of national productivity. Why can't the damn judges do their jobs?
I would be okay if it paid well but after wasting an entire day I get paid $17.50. They don't even cover lunch, you stingy morons.
