Kinda freaky being in that tube. I actually crawled under my truck to practice…

Yes. Several. They take so damn long I usually fall asleep and then get trippy dreams from the magnet. It was also a super weird feeling on my permanent retainer.

Also, MRIs with contrast are the worst.

Going in feet first for a lower body scan isn't bad. Head first for 45 minutes is the suck.

Yes for my shoulder. Wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

How about we go back to exploratory surgeries!?

A Valium sure helps with my claustrophobia. Versed is good as well.

If you are claustrophobic, then better take something to relax. Wish I could just stay calm and fall asleep. No chance!

Request a sedative from the doctor to take before the exam.

I don't remember the contrast being that bad other than cool feeling if I remember correctly. Then again they hit me with morphine either shortly before or after that so it's a little hazy. The foot MRI was NBD at all and no contrast.

I had a detailed brain scan as part of a project to produce a normal anatomy MRI database back in medical school. I had to do a bunch of neuro testing to prove I was neurologically normal first. It was a long scan took about an hour and I fell asleep. It was pretty cool seeing my brain though! This was back in 1996 or so.

Many times. It's loud even with earplugs. Contrast didn't bother me although it was either MRI or CT that I had contrast that made me feel like I was going to the restroom even though I wasn't. They warned me about it but I wasn't ready for it!

Longest I've been in the tube was 2 hours and 10 minutes. Fell asleep and the tech kept talking on the loudspeaker telling me to wake up and breathe.

If you can steal a catalytic converter you can get a catscan.

Yes! Now I remember, they told me the same thing. It would feel like I was peeing myself. It really didn't too bad it was just like a cooling effect.

CT contrast is the one giving you a warm peeing yourself feeling.

The claustrophobia is....not fun.

I've told my close family, "MAKE SURE I AM TRIPLE DEAD BEFORE THEY PUT ME IN THE GROUND. BEHEAD ME IF YOU MUST."

I had a full blown panic attack while getting a nuclear stress test. I told the tech to keep the camera off my chest, but nooooo…..he said it would be ok cause it has to be close. That damn thing rubbed me, and I freaked out. The Valium was wearing off at that point. My wife was in the waiting area down the hallway and could hear me yelling "get me outta here". She said my limbs were locked up, but my whole body was shaking. They got it done by backing off the camera.

Another time, they stuck me in a PET scanner…it pushed my arms together when I went into the tube. That didn't work at all. I couldn't get up for 5 minutes.

I had to walk out of the room while we were watching Buried. Felt a panic attack coming on.

Yep had a brain mri to figure out some chronic migraines. I have a brain abnormality that wasn't the cause of them though my wife likes to point out that I have a brain deformity as often as she can

PET isn't even a full tube like the MRI. It's a donut like the CT. And not very loud.

Dang, man. Guessing you don't like elevators either.

I'm supposed to take this MRI machine from Italy for a spin next week.

It's an Open MRI on its side. You just sit in the chair.

Had an MRI about a year ago. Open on both ends and my head was outside of the tube. It was loud, but didn't require ear plugs. Quite honestly, it was much ado about nothing.

The technology exists to make them bearable. The machine at MD Anderson at The Woodlands has a mirror setup so that when you open your eyes you see the room around you. Really minimizes the claustrophobia.

I've had more than 50. Thanks brain tumors!

Claustrophobia never bothered me. The noise? Yeah but plugs minimize it.

Mine take a long time because of my history and they always want 2; one with contrast and one without.

I have to concentrate on staying awake because I snore and that messes up the images.

It's gotten kinda routine to be honest.

BTW, they give you a bulb to squeeze in case you need something/freaking out/need to pee and just can't hold it. I've squeezed it before but I learned only if it's a real urgent issue because you want to let them get the best imaging. Remember you or somebody is paying a big stack of jack for the service. You obviously want the best/most for your $$$$.

No need to worry. It's obviously a new deal if you've never done it but it's not a big deal.

They made custom ear plugs for me years ago. Because of the tumors they took out my entire left ear and all inner ear mechanisms including the equilibrium. I need to protect my only remaining good ear.

I have 2 plugs. They are molded to fit my ear canal. One is a shooting/firearms plug that's deadens all sound. The other is a 15 decibel reduction plug. It allows me to go hear live music and still be able to enjoy. I take both to Kyle for the big games.

I'm very thankful to my team here in San Antonio, neurosurgeons Dr. Chris Bogaev, Dr Arnold Vardeman, head and neck surgeon Dr. Richard Newman (FTACO '72) , Anesthesiologist Dr. Bob Jones (FTACO I'm not sure! )and otolaryngology Dr. Susan Marenda-King. Also in Charlottesville VA, neurosurgeon Dr. Jason Sheehan, the absolute world wide best guru of the Gamma knife procedure. Without these folks I'm not sure how bad my life would have turned out. I live very normally now.
