ASD is an atrial septal defect. It's a congenital heart condition where there's a hole between the two atria. Depending on the size of the hole it could cause no symptoms or could cause significant issues. Definitely something to monitor and always better to diagnose early. Some people don't know they have it until they are adults.

Although it can be incredibly stressful, most of the time I absolutely look forward to and love doing surgery. Especially when there are no supply chain issues and they have everything I want/need and the staff I am used to.

Seeing people in the office can be a mixed bag. I have a great staff that I enjoy being with (one of whom I have worked with for 25 years!).

Are you a trauma surgeon?

The other day at work, patient drove through wooden fence causing part of fence to come through windshield penetrating chest cavity below collar bone. Paramedic partner performed needle decompression, bilateral 18 gauge IV and rapid transport to trauma hospital. Upon arrival, patient went into cardiac arrest surgeon performed thoracotomy to cross clamp aorta and place chest tube. Patient went to surgery but later died.

Very interesting to see the procedure up close.

No, I am ENT and I have a second Board Certification in Sleep. I did way more trauma than I ever wanted to do or see during my 10 years of med school and residency at U.T. Southwestern (Parkland Hospital, etc.). I can still recall some things I saw in the Parkland E.R. that haunt me. Kudos to you and your team for doing that stuff, though. It takes a lot out of you.

As far as a surgeon not enjoying doing surgery, I can definitely think of several. Usually they just make everyone around them on edge and miserable. Funny how that works. Surgery isn't always fun and games, but "misery loves company" needn't be the mantra, either.

I have watched a few orthopedic surgeries back in college and had no idea how physically demanding it is as well as the number of chisels and hammers used to shape bone. No wonder people are so sore after surgery.
True story. I broke my hand rodding a femur when I was on my Orthopedics rotation at Parkland. HUGE guy who had a midshaft femur fracture broken by a dude with a tire iron. Other guy must have been a helluva fighter.

Was it a clean break? Impact of tire iron on outside of leg?
Yep. Midshaft femur fracture. The guy was easily upper 200 pounds. Of course, the story is probably never exactly what happened. The Two Dudes who came up from behind people who were just minding their own business were notorious on Friday and Saturday nights. Kept the E.R. hopping.
The rod was extremely tight, even after we reamed out the femur a couple of times. My ortho resident was a big jock, so of course he wanted to make fun of anyone going into ENT. Ego got the better of me, and damnit, I was going to finish the job without any help. I was banging on that rod forever to get it past the curve. My hand hurt for the rest of the rotation, he finally took me under the C-arm to look at it. Sure enough, an avulsion fracture of the metacarpal. I brought shame upon myself and upon my specialty.

How would it sound if a surgeon said they don't love their job?
sounds like a surgeon that would not be performing surgery on me.
Exactly! Thankfully I very much love my job - except the days of someone not making it never get any easier

About 6 years ago, I did some consulting work for HEB. Much of my time was spent out in the field. Quite candidly, I was shocked how many people at HEB loved their jobs! I'll never forget meeting a Deli Manager who had worked there for 39 years. I asked her why she stayed. Simple answer...'they treat me the way I treat others, with kindness and respect.'

Ironically, when my consulting work was completed I submitted my report to the boss. I found little, if anything, that needed to be corrected...which told me their employees were trained well, and executed what they were taught. He wasn't pleased, because he wanted to get the contract extended to create more revenue for the consulting group.

Personally, I don't care for the field I currently work, but my time on that contract was a blast and a lot of fun. These days, whenever I travel to Texas, I head to the closest HEB Plus because I absolutely love their stores.

Same for me, and it'll stay that way for the next 2-3 years. Then, hopefully, I'm out.

Got to say it's pretty good. I've got to build a good team of people I like through nepotism, lots of freedom to work when I want and take off when I want. Things are pretty good.

I'm good at my job. It's easy and pays well enough. But I don't get any kind of self worth from it. It's just a paycheck, not my identity.

Exactly. I'm well compensated for my job, and work for a company that I really do believe cares for its customers and wants to do the right thing. I'm good at it, and we do good work.

All that being said, I'd go be a garbage man if they paid me more. This is all a game to get me one day closer to the double bird I'm outta here forever moment.

Sweet glorious retirement.

Been in the National Guard for 23 years, with 19 of them on active duty orders. There's times I've loved my job and loved the people I've worked with. There's times I've hated the job and despised the people I worked for, but I kept doing it because it was important.

Now, though, I'm just tired. Every day leaves me mentally exhausted. Soldiers today are not what they were for most of my career, and neither is the military. Some of that is good, but much of it definitely is not. I both look forward to retirement and dread it. I feel like Morgan Freeman in Shawshank. I've been institutionalized. I don't know any other life besides the military anymore, and part of me is terrified of leaving that. But I'm afraid that if I don't do it, and soon, I'm going to look back on my service with nothing but bitterness.

I took an early retirement in 2019 and didn't love my job at all. There were a few things that I liked about it and I made good money. Leaving was one of the best decisions I made.

Love the actual job, but the company mindset and the folks I work for/with could be better. The last two years have really shown that we were kind of just getting by and weren't prepared for the S to hit the fan. I'd love to find another job doing the same thing for a company that's got it's stuff together, but I haven't found that yet.

Most days, i really enjoy what i do. I'm a sales rep for a mid sized privately owned company, and I'm mostly able to manage myself. That's an important factor for me.

If i won the lotto I'd give my two weeks notice but that's mostly out of respect for my customers and not the company.

Love my job. Allows wife to stay home (we're in our early 30's), make very good money, figured out how to integrate my wife and kids into weekly activities, and have the flexibility to still make a lot of family activities. Of course there are high stress days with things that aggravate me at times but I absolutely love what I do.

I have historically hated my job more often than not, but I currently love my job.
Boss good, Company good, work good, commute good (bedroom to home office), coworkers good, pay highest ever.

Now I just hope I don't get laid off in this recession.

You are right. I have often felt like this.
I might retire when I am still youngish. Go see the world, do other things. For now I enjoy my job.

I love mine, but I think it's really just because I have a job that pays really well, is as flexible as I want it to be (work from home to an extent, can leave early, arrive late anytime), my hours are 9-4 which is amazing, and I can easily 'work' a few days when I'm on vacation, so that my 15 days is really 20-25 worth of travel with my family. For example, this year we did 6 days in FL/disney for spring break, another 10 days and disney cruise in June, a 10 day trip in MO and TX in June/July 4th, we have 5 days booked in Durango over labor day, and a 6 day trip to UT/AZ for fall break.

My boss is the owner, I seem him maybe once or twice a week and he doesn't micromanage. I rarely have deadlines, I never take work home or stress about something at work, and overall this small private company is just amazing in my mind to work for.

I've told my wife, who has poked the bear a bit from time to time to cash out our equity here in CO and go live like kings down in TX, that it just ain't happening. I do not want to give up this job.

I am very similar to you. The flexibility and environment I work in now with my team and leadership is something I had been hunting since a teenager. I am very happy with the situation. The work itself is kinda boring at times but honestly, it's better than living on the other end of the spectrum of stress.

It's honestly pretty incredible the QOL changes when surrounded by people that trust and care about you. That's new for me and I absolutely can get used to it! The one downside is that the salary is a little below competitive and zero bonuses to speak of but with everything else, it's worth it. At least for now.

All is n all, it's better than what I was doing before and that is a massive win for me.

Day to day somewhere between don't mind and like. Very rarely love but also very rarely hate. But also I feel like I'm well compensated for my time, I'm pretty good at what I do, and couldn't make the same money elsewhere.

I'm at the tolerate, but looking for better opportunities phase. My compensation is good, but there is no chance for upward mobility where I'm at and I'm bored to death.
