Rewatching the whole thing from season one on Disney Plus. I didn't know the order of episodes when I watched it in the late 90s. Some of the good episodes I liked were in Season 1. So it must have been very well received. I read this was the first cartoon series for growups.

Seems prosaic now, but it was somewhat controversial at the time. Bart was seen as a bad role model for kids.

But definitely not the first cartoon for adults. Fritz the Cat came out in the 70s, and I doubt that was the first, either.

It started on the Tracy Ulman show, correct? Are those episodes even considered part of a "season" or is the stand alone show where you start Season 1, Episode 1?

It was controversial for some. I remember being pissed that my parents wouldn't let us watch it. Some of my friends did, but a lot of them had parents like mine. Eventually (few weeks) I gave up trying to convince them they were being dumb. I thought Bart was cool but never really watched, and never really got into a habit of doing so later.

It was probably the biggest parent-induced pop culture miss-out I ever experienced.

I was in HS when it launched. Definitely seen as edgy and somewhat controversial. "I'm Bart Simpson. Who the hell are you?" tshirts were popular

season 1 is so bad.

Most of the season is, but the first two episodes are classic.

Parents hated it, kids loved it. In 30 years, what's considered controversial now will be tame.

Probably about the same reaction as when South Park came out. In a lot of ways, I feel like the Simpsons paved the way for a lot of off color comedy in the 90s that now just seems kinda ordinary.

I was in middle school at the time and rocked this shirt.

Yeah, this is the one you got if you didn't want to be sent home or made to turn your shirt inside out

Last Exit to Springfield for me.

I'd just started at A&M and was hooked from the get-go. The creator (Matt Groening) was already somewhat of a known commodity from his "Life is Hell" cartoon books.

I was 1 when it started and grew up loving it during it's golden era. I had a Simpsons-themed birthday party when I turned around 5 or 6.

You are way down playing the reaction from the religious right.

The life is hell books are awesome.

The first season or two was about how Bart was a bad kid ("Who the Hell are you?" and "Eat my shorts"). Kids would wear those shirts to schools, and teachers and parents didn't like it. The show eventually came to be centered on how Homer is an oaf.

The writing in the 1990s was superb satire, but about the time they killed Maude Flanders I lost interest.

George Bush Sr once campaigned on the theme:
"This country needs to be more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons".
“If you’re going to have crime it should at least be organized crime”

By the time Beavis and Butthead got popular I was 13 and well versed at how to and when not to not let my parents know what I was watching. They didn't even know about them until the movie came out.

Other than 7th Heaven, I think this is the one show that had regular church attendance

Anyone listen to "Deep Trouble" and "Do the Bartman" on the radio back in the very early '90s?

I was in intermediate school when it came out, and we couldn't wear the clothes. I remember my dad finally letting me get a couple of shirts and one where Bart was licensed on collegiate shirts. I had one with Texas A&M. They were huge at the time, and kids my age wanted the Bart Simpson clothes. They also had a huge song with "Do the Bartman", that played on MTV.

You must be old. Many districts now have intermediate school between elementary and middle. It's usually 5th and 6th grade.

I think it was part of Liquid TV or 120 minutes on MTV... maybe Sunday nights? We would take a break from Dudley's and go to the Wing Joint to watch it.

I am old enough that every word of Racer X's post makes complete sense and has zero ambiguity.
