Heavy items go in the smallest possible box such that the box does not become too difficult to move due to total weight or too unbalanced by one heavy item off center. Also, greater odds the box tape fails if a heavy item is weighing down on a poorly taped seam.
You don't want two 50lb things in one box when you can put them each in a smaller box, so that someone isn't needlessly struggling trying to carry a large and extra heavy box. Seems only logical. Most parcel companies try to keep individual parcel boxes to 40-50lb or less, because that's the largest carrying weight that a person can safely repeatedly handle in a day's work without injury on average.
