Best we have been able to find at HEB is Old El Paso, but we're getting a little bored with it. We have tried most of the standards - Lowry's, McCormick, HEB, etc. Anyone got better suggestions or a homemade blend for easy ground beef tacos?

Not a packet but I like to use Mateo's Salsa. Bonus is it's a Texas product.

Isn't this stuff pretty much salt, cumin, garlic, tomato paste and chili powder?

Diced onion and green bell/poblano. Minced garlic. Salt, pepper, cumin

If you're too lazy to dice the vegetables use dried minced onion and garlic powder. Mexican restaurants generally don't use chili powder and that's why none of the store brands taste like restaurant picadillo

Here's my homemade recipe:

Brown 1.5 pounds meat and saute a small yellow onion. Add 3 cloves garlic, 2 tbsp New Mexican chili powder, 1 tsp cumin and oregano and a couple spoonfuls of tomato paste. Cook over med low heat for about 10 minutes and season to taste with salt. Add a couple stems of chopped cilantro and the juice of one lime.

If you want it spicier, add a diced jalapeno with the onion or some cayenne pepper. You can use generic chili powder, but that stuff is so overpowering, it will taste like every other taco spice packet at the store, which is why they all taste the same.

Just throw some garlic powder, salt, pepper, cumin, paprika and thyme in there.

Better without the chili powder

Fronterra - The original taco seasoning is ok, but the skillet one is awesome.

100% the best prepackaged seasoning.

You can absolutely beat it by using fresh ingredients, but it beats all the other packaged stuff and is actually pretty good for the ease and ability to have on hand all the time.

Taco seasoning in a packet? I think the joke is down the used condom line of thought.

With as "spicy" as the Op's mom's taco is, I make sure to keep my seasoning in a packet.
