How long do you want to ignore this user?
These dreams have happened several times for most my adult life:

  • Checking the mail at the house I grew up in
  • Trying to turn on the light in my bedroom of house I grew up in and it won't come on
  • Driving up a steep bridge that's close to 90 degrees from the road, horrifyingly defying gravity
  • Driving fast on top of a lake hoping I make it to the other side before I sink

What y'all got?

I have a final in a class I haven't been going to all semester.

Haven't had it in a while which I guess means I've got my stuff together or my subconscious has decided I'm totally hopeless so it's not bothering to alert me.

I always have the one where I see myself in some sort of sun god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women throwing little pickles at me.

This one. Graduated 20 years ago and I still have it once or twice a year.

I also dream that my teeth are falling out. They just crumble in my mouth. Fortunately haven't had this one in a couple years.

I don't have any clothes on, but nobody notices.

I am late or missed football practice and I know the coach will be pissed and I will get yelled at and have to run.

Dreams About Losing Teeth

What do dreams mean if your teeth fall out? Penny Peirce, the author of Dream Dictionary for Dummies, suggests that dreaming about losing teeth can have multiple meanings.

This might mean that you are worried about your attractiveness or appearance, for instance. It may also indicate that you are concerned about your ability to communicate, or that you are concerned that you might have said something embarrassing.

"The real essence of teeth is their ability to bite through, to cut, tear, and grind," she explains. "If your teeth fall out, you lose personal power and your ability to be assertive, decisive, and self-protective."

Dreams About Taking a Test

Studies have also found that dreams of test-taking are common. According to Craig Hamilton-Parker, author of The Hidden Meaning of Dreams, taking an exam in your dream might reveal an underlying fear of failure.

"Examinations are stressful experiences in which you are made to face up to your shortcomings," he writes. "To dream of failing an exam, being late for one, or being unprepared shows that you feel unprepared for the challenges of waking life."

This one. Or I'm in a fight and my arms don't work and can't land a good punch. Or in battle and my weapon won't fire.

I used to dream that I was being chased through a mall by monsters disguised as people, and nobody but me recognized what they were. The mall stores were in a particular order, and I got to where I could tell I was in a dream when I recognized the order of the stores. Later on, that mall would be the setting for other, less scary dreams, and again I would usually know I was dreaming when I recognized the order of the stores.

I have the college final one too. An offshoot of that I also get is I'm back at my high school job (movie theatre) and people are giving me complicated concession orders and I keep screwing them up as the customers get more irate.

I had this one again not long ago. What wakes me up is the thought of "I have a degree from Texas A&M! I can't possibly need this &$#@!"

My mom died in July of last year after a battle with pancreatic cancer. In her final days and weeks I would visit her as often as i could and we would just lay there and I would hold her hand. She didn't have a lot of strength and slept most of the time, but she knew I was there when I held her hand and she would squeeze my hand as hard as she could.

Ever since she passed, at least a couple time a month I will dream about her hands. I can see them so vividly as if they are right in front of me. It is pretty amazing that I can remember her hands so perfectly. The part that sucks is that in the dream her hands are always just out of reach and I as hard as I try I can never get to them to hold them.

I wake up in tears every time.

My other dream is that I am back in school and I either can't find my class schedule or if I do know my class schedule I can't find the actual physical classroom. So weird. Not sure what to make of that one.

Whenever I'm running in my dreams, I never go anywhere. Like Im stuck in mud or have no ability to run.

I can't scream or yell in my dreams.

I have nightmares any time I'm remotely mentally stressed or overwhelmed.

I have some similar dreams. Now that I teach a university part time, I have one where either I get to class really late and I can't get organized to teach or I arrive at the last class of the semester and realize its the first time I've been there and I haven't taught them anything.

I was at A&M-Galveston for a while, and I also occasionally dream I'm going back to finish up a degree there and I'm meeting on the Texas Clipper with old friends who were in the corps there.

Definitely have the dream about the final. Of course that also was a reality during my time at A&M.
Used to have a dream about not being able to remember my locker combo in high school.
Sometimes have a dream that I've moved back to College Station and am looking for an apartment, wondering where I'm going to put all my stuff, then remembering in the dream it's been decades since I graduated.

Often dream about a good friend who killed himself in 2009. Like I see someone at a ballgame who I think is him, then remember in dream that he's gone. That one always sucks.

This thread feels familiar, like there was one just like it a few years ago. Or maybe I dreamt it.

Anyway....

A college professor friend told me his recurring dream many years ago- He shows up to teach a class that was "like" his field, but wasn't exactly in his field. Like a botanist teaching anatomy- both biology but different. He tries to fake it but the class knows he's lost. He said the worst part was him realizing that the class is "on to him" and their reaction- not calling him out or laughing but pity. Like, "You poor sap. You really don't know what you're doing, do you? That's just sad."

I thought that was pretty funny. Until I started adjunct teaching and having the same dream.

I show up for a class in the right room in the right building at the right time but the "wrong" course is listed on the door with my name assigned to it. It's a course I had as an undergrad but haven't thought about since then and isn't even close to my teaching field. I go in, find the textbook on a desk, and open it up to chapter one and start furiously outlining an overview lecture. The previous class in the room had moved the desks around like it was a discussion class, so as students start showing up I tell them to get everything straightened out and in order as a way to stall for additional prep-time. Then I wake up.

Imposter syndrome is real.

Well, I spent about 15 years there. It wasn't torture, but it was a long time.
