El Chaparral in Helotes. The bean soup they bring out before the entree is the bomb, especially when it's cold outside.

Agree with most of the consensus here. 4 or 5 great restaurants keep coming up.

Another vote for El Jarro de Arturo. My favorites there are the Chicken Fundido and "Chad's Lite Special". The service there can be hit or miss, but those dishes are always the bomb.

I have to ask those who recommend El Chaparral - what do you get there? I've been a few times and have always wondered "how does this place get named in 'best' lists?!" I've apparently ordered poorly when there...

We have been going there for over 50 years.
My Dad grew up 3 blocks from there on Santa Barbara. Went to both the old AND new Edison HS....

Keep heading out past Helotes and go to Lakehills and eat at La Cabana...

The owner of Guajilos just opened a restaurant here on NPI. It's legit good food.

El Mirasol is ok, but it seems really sanitized and mainstream to me. El Chap is great. If you go to the original out in Helotes (what I recommend), ask for Alejandro, the older one. We ask for him everytime we go and he's phenomenal. Met the owners a couple of times, and they're really nice.

Also, Nicha's on 410 was pretty good the last time I went, but it's been years. It's just farther away now that we've moved. El Buen Gusto is a nice hole in the wall place with great tacos. I hear they have a pretty good breakfast too.

We go to the Nicha's on Roosevelt right by Mission San Jose. Not the best area of town, but it's where I grew up. I don't think the one on 410 is open anymore.

We get the family sized mixed fajitas mostly (ask for corn tortillas), but I also like the enchiladas nortenas. You also can't go wrong with the chicken or beef enchiladas. They're not like all world, but they're pretty good. I haven't had a lot of other things, but my wife has had their chimichanga before and liked it.

Nicha's Comida over by 410 and Bandera? It would be sad if covid killed it.

And since I'm thinking of this area, there's a really kick*** Moroccan place (Moroccan Bites) hidden in a little strip center at Wurzbach and Evers. The baclava and desserts are phenomenal, and the tajines are amazing. It's not Mexican, but if you're looking for somewhere to eat on the northwest side, you should try it.

It's seafood. Fresh gulf coast oysters, fried fish and shrimp, and the best micheladas anywhere. And it's cheap. All the guys shucking oysters are Mexican, though, if that counts.

Does anyone remember the name of the place I went to a long time ago on the near north side of town to meet some old journalist? It was a one story brick building, kind of dark and cozy inside. I think they had red vinyl/leather seating. Learned to appreciate a fried egg on top of my enchiladas there. I don't remember the name of the restaurant or the old man, and I'm not sure the restaurant is still there. Hope this helps.

No, not Mexican but one of my favorite chicken fried steaks ever was at Al & Mo's up by UTSA. Wasn't there a long time, bit great food and always busy.

This is the go to response that makes people feel hip... it's meat, rice, beans, cheese, tortillas and margs. It tastes the same everywhere just like Chinese buffet food.
