I read once that dolphins have sex for fun so that's a definite bright spot on their intelligence resume.

No. They have the intelligence and problem solving abilities of a small child and are much stronger and faster than an adult.

My little girl told me she wants to be a Dolphin trainer when she grows up and it got me wondering about them again..

How smart are they? Are they really the smartest animals(besides humans) on the planet?

Internet searches yield different results.. some folks believe Chimpanzees are the smartest and some think Dolphins are.

It depends. It's hard to measure the intelligence of animals like dogs and dolphins because they experience the world much differently than we do. Understanding object permanence, for example, is different for dogs and dolphins than us.

It's also hard to decide on any kind of metric or test. What applies to one species won't apply to most others.

Also, if she really wants to be a dolphin trainer, I happen to know one really well. She'd be happy to answer any questions your daughter has.

Terrible propaganda piece. Made to punch you in the feels. The people who made that are the same ones who think your dog would be better off dead than happily sleeping on your bed.

...or in our case we feel like she lets us sleep in her bed. Still scratching my head on that one.

This isn't political. I went to sea world as a kid and thought nothing of it, but watching that doc when I think about going there now, taking kids, etc my stomach turns. Its hardly a PETA point of view to think a whale (dolphin, sea lions, etc) should be restricted to a bathtub its entire existence. Zoos and aquariums are sorta ****ed up and while I think some do great things to offset their negatives (eg breeding programs for endangered species), sea world is not one of them.

"Peter liked to be with me," explains Lovatt. "He would rub himself on my knee, or my foot, or my hand. And at first I would put him downstairs with the girls," she says. But transporting Peter downstairs proved so disruptive to the lessons that, faced with his frequent arousals, it just seemed easier for Lovatt to relieve his urges herself manually.
"I allowed that," she says. "I wasn't uncomfortable with it, as long as it wasn't rough. It would just become part of what was going on, like an itch just get rid of it, scratch it and move on. And that's how it seemed to work out. It wasn't private. People could observe it."
For Lovatt it was a precious thing, which was always carried out with great respect. "Peter was right there and he knew that I was right there," she continues. "It wasn't sexual on my part. Sensuous perhaps. It seemed to me that it made the bond closer. Not because of the sexual activity, but because of the lack of having to keep breaking. And that's really all it was. I was there to get to know Peter. That was part of Peter."

It does, but they all fair fine in captivity. In fact, they do even better.

Just learned this.. not even sure why I didn't know that tbh. I also learned that Great White sharks are terrified of Orcas because they will straight up murder them and suck out their liver for a snack.

Nature is metal AF
Jaws 1775. Orca 1777. The fish movies provided this information.

Orcas are the Mac daddies of the ocean for sure. I saw them in the wild in Alaska and it was such a cool sight. Amazing animals

I watched a documentary once where Orcas had learned to flip Great Whites on their backs because it makes sharks go to sleep for some reason when they are up side down. Then they ripped that motherfuc**a apart because it was trying to eat a newborn Orca.

As a bonafide marine biologist, George Costanza jokes aside, I think I'm qualified to say, and please listen carefully, while she may want to train dolphins, dolphins do not want to be trained by her. That's right. Mostly, dolphins want to eat fishes and have sex with other dolphins. And that's pretty much it. Oh, I know that there are the occasional dolphins that hang around beaches, swim with humans and seem to be chummy, but these are the exceptions.

I saw an Orca do a keg stand back in college. That dude was jacked up, pinched another whale in his mouth and ran off with his gf.

Who knew that flogging the dolphin might involve an actual dolphin?
