Interesting trivia -- Taco Cabana was started in the late 70's by two brothers. One had been in the restaurant / bar business before. His brother, Mike Stehling, was a high school band director. Mike sold his share in the 80's. Doubt he made much as a band director. And he sold out before the chain really took off.

But he did keep a few stores and named them TaCasita which had the exact same menu as TC. The split was over whether to expand or stay local to SA.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Mike Stehling was a band director in Bandera and we always thought it was interesting he was part of a very prominent restaurant chain, although he got out of it before it really took off.

My favorite TC memory was back in '99 or '00, late night with the post-bar crowd waiting in line to get my drink staring laser beams at the most perfect backside I'd ever seen in a pair of jeans in front of me, it was magical.

She gets her drink and goes off to her table and the security guard that loitered by the soda fountain just sort of nodded and said, "she fine". I nodded back. Total bro moment between a college student and a middle aged security guard.

One issue with TC was their lack of consistency from location to location. We had 3 within 10 minutes of our house and the difference between them was significant.

Day to day consistency was an issue. We'd place bets on the refried bean viscosity, it would range from thinner than the salsa to almost crunchy.

I'm surprised that didn't occur to me.

The last time I went to TC( several years ago), the Spanish rice that came with my meal was obviously scraped from the bottom of the heated container. Dried out and crispy. No excuse for that.

TC has been trash for years ever since they sold to that Dallas company who now sold TC to concentrate on that shiddass Pollo Tropical restaurant chain.

Nothing of value has been lost.

Got thrown out of TC a couple years ago in College Station because I went in drunk with some friends at like 2:30 and they still had beer out and uncovered. Grabbed one, chugged it, and then put it on the counter to pay for it. The cashier looked at me like "wtf" and the cop at the end of the register was laughing his ass off.

For convenience, TC and Rudys are the choices in my hood. I've tried to get Rudys to serve a pico at their establishment, and I keep getting denied.

TC was pretty decent in the early 90s.

Nowadays, I don't see the point in going to one. If your town is big enough to have a TC, it'll have a local taqueria/food truck or 4 that's better and probably cheaper.

I guess it's good to be able to get a frozen marg with your crappy fast food, but that's about it.

It's will be OK, that California company will probably be moving to Austin soon, like all the rest.

So TC HQ will move from San Antonio to Austin by way of California. Sounds about right.

Mama Margies in SA is named after the original chef at Taco Cabana and was started by the same family.
