Their marketing is much better than their whiskey.

Still Austin Straight Bourbon, or Milam and Greene Triple Cask.

Those are the only two that have not had the Texas Funk. Not everyone likes the Texas Funk. Everyone has really seemed to like that Still Austin, including me.

I really, really tried to like it. Drink Texas Bourbon and all that. But there are just so many better bourbons at much lower prices. It's just a tough pour.

Even at $30 a bottle, I would be hard pressed to buy it. But at $80 and up, well ...

I haven't tried it yet, but we drove by this place on Blanco Road in San Antonio the other day and plan to go back and give it a try next time we are in town. Spirits Chapline Distillery It appears that they are just selling it at their place, which is only open on Saturdays at the moment. No mention of aging on the website, so I would presume that it is actually a "spirit whiskey" instead of a true bourbon, but we will see how it is.

Ironroot Harbinger is a great bourbon if you can find it.

Yes it is, as is their Promethean, which is both a little less alcoholic and a little easier to find.

I chose a bottle of 1835 bourbon and a bottle of Deep Eddy lemon vodka.

He and his fiance/wife as of next Tuesday live in Tennessee so make they may be underwhelmed by the bourbon so I bought the vodka to make up for it, just in case.

Me too. I spent even more on a bottle of Balmorhea because Jim Murray said it was really good. It was drinkable, and interesting. Tasted like bubble gum. Wasn't worth the coin.

I took it to mean it was the main (but not only) bourbon they drank at the lease.

Correct, since Dad is primarily a Jack Daniels drinker and another buddy swears that Crown is the only thing worth drinking.

So we went by the Chapline distillery on Blanco Road north of San Antonio today. They had two bourbons for sale or taste, both called "critical batch" bourbons. Mike Chapline, the owner is a retired submariner and critical batch is apparently a nuke term they use. The "straight bourbon" is a bourbon made to their specifications in Kentucky and aged 2 years. The "Texas Bourbon Whiskey" is a bourbon they make on site and is aged about 4 months. They are in the process of doubling their production and branching out in their distribution and sales. They sell neat pours, and a few different mixed drinks, as well as a Limoncello and a bourbon vanilla for baking. We tried the straight and the Texas bourbons and ended up buying a bottle of the Texas. Both are single barrel cask strength (55%abv 110proof). The Texas was smoother and a bit more mellow than the straight bourbon, but the straight was a bit sweeter. Mike bottled and sealed our bottle while we were there from a barrel first opened today. It isn't cheap, $63/ bottle, but for a quality hand made (Mike and his family work six days a week making the bourbon onsite) cask strength single barrel bourbon in today's market, it is a reasonable price for what you get.

They are open for happy hours on some fridays (check their Facebook page) and from 12-5 on Saturdays. They had free cookies, chocolate pie, and chili when we were there on a Saturday. I would encourage y'all to give them a visit and a taste.

Nine Banded is pretty damn good for a Texas Whiskey.

If the taste of their product was as big as Dan's ego it would be good…as it is it's way overpriced for what you get…imho..

Yeah, we just happened to see it there driving down towards 1604 on our way home from my FIL's place earlier this year. The tasting room is pretty small and contained and the drinks aren't free. But Mike the owner was there splitting time between cooking a pot of chili over a fire outside, working on his laptop at a table inside, and talking bourbon and distilling with customers inside.

Avoid the MKT whiskey in Katy, might as well buff floors with it.

I always keep some Ironroot Harbinger on hand. IMO one of the best whiskeys made in Texas.
