I miss the way people flew in the 70s.
I traveled in the 70's as a kid. Never wore then what we wear now. I remember my mom making matching suits for my dad and I (I was 6) for a trip to India. Suits, I tell you.

My uncle flew for TWA, retiring in 1982 after flying for 30 years. There was never a conversation with him that did not include something about airplanes. And he was old school - very proper, respectful.
He used to tell a story of removing a passenger for wearing flip flops, cutoff jeans, and a tank top. Said he wasn't dressed properly and he was not going to fly the young man. He said the man was the son of some Hollywood star, although I don't recall ever knowing who the star was.
I guess Uncle Gene could get away with it as he was the senior pilot within TWA.

Alas, most of us guys can never hope to look as good a Gary Grant in a suit. Or even a young Marlon Brando in slightly more casual ware.Athanasius said:

I do miss the dignity that came with the past. The Wal-Marting of America has led to a lot of, well, trashy behavior.

Like the dignity afforded the black folks in the past?

Dignity is inherent in a person. Respect is given.

Flip flops, athletic shorts and a dry-fit tshirt. Because f*** your feelings.
If someone else's attire upsets you, you deserve to be upset.
Back then, you wouldn't have qualified to get on the airplanes...scd88 said:

The Wal-Marting of America allowed us non Rich/Celebrity/Politicians to be able to afford to fly like we do...
The dress of people back then on airplanes also has nothing to do with "More affordable and accessible air travel " today.GAC06 said:Ag with kids said:Back then, you wouldn't have qualified to get on the airplanes...scd88 said:

Ordinary people didn't go out in public in pajamas or athletic gear. More affordable and accessible air travel has very little to do with people being trashy slobs.
I'm not the one telling others what their dress code should be on an airplane they may not even be on...GAC06 said:

**** you. I'm fat. I'll dress however I want. I like comfortable.GAC06 said:

This. After flying back and forth to Europe* for work enough times to nearly always get bumped up on any flight, I stopped caring about anything other than being comfortable. I'm watching mediocre movies I didn't care to pay in theaters, eating mediocre food, breathing recycled air, but supposed to dress like I'm in a damn country club? Nope. Y'all wear your polos and pressed jeans. I'll be in sweat pants and a hoodie.
*Not intended as a brag. Imagine flying into DFW with intense jet lag and immediately going to an industrial park in Weatherford for the next week, multiple times per year. That was my equivalent experience.
