I traveled in the 70's as a kid. Never wore then what we wear now. I remember my mom making matching suits for my dad and I (I was 6) for a trip to India. Suits, I tell you.

I don't. People smoked on planes

My uncle flew for TWA, retiring in 1982 after flying for 30 years. There was never a conversation with him that did not include something about airplanes. And he was old school - very proper, respectful.

He used to tell a story of removing a passenger for wearing flip flops, cutoff jeans, and a tank top. Said he wasn't dressed properly and he was not going to fly the young man. He said the man was the son of some Hollywood star, although I don't recall ever knowing who the star was.

I guess Uncle Gene could get away with it as he was the senior pilot within TWA.

Gene sounds like a great guy. A real professional. I love meeting and getting to know folks like that.

Haha. Also true. You get used to it as it was just more prevalent then.

Yep, that part was seriously nasty. I was seriously happy when they banned that crap. It's just not socially acceptable.

Alas, most of us guys can never hope to look as good a Gary Grant in a suit. Or even a young Marlon Brando in slightly more casual ware.

An excuse to post pictures of Gracie!

I do miss the dignity that came with the past. The Wal-Marting of America has led to a lot of, well, trashy behavior.

The problem with trying to gatekeep air travel by saying you must wear nice clothes is that flying (unless business/first class) is essentially like riding a bus.
Crammed into seats, with no leg room and no real food service.

Screw that... I'm gonna be as comfortable as I can be.

Like the dignity afforded the black folks in the past?

Dignity is inherent in a person or at least self possessed. Respect is given.

That's quite a leap there. You wanna go forum 16 then take it over there. You know damn well I wasn't referring to that.

Good point. I stand corrected. And I'll add..respect is also earned.

My mind went immediately to the giant "the past was so much more dignified and respectful" circle jerk that is happening here.

I'm still pissed at your logic here as I don't think you get it. Pretty big difference in how people traveled in the 1975 versus now. The comments have NOTHING to do with race.

But good job taking it there.

They had more class on their toe nail than most of the idiots toting their fat asses around airports with their "busted can o biscuits" in tow.

Flip flops, athletic shorts and a dry-fit tshirt. Because f*** your feelings.

If someone else's attire upsets you, you deserve to be upset.

This is the outfit I wear on all flights. Idgaf if I'm getting off the plane in Siberia.

Back then, you wouldn't have qualified to get on the airplanes...

The Wal-Marting of America allowed us non Rich/Celebrity/Politicians to be able to afford to fly like we do...

Depends on what my expectations are of the day I arrive. Straight to work then yeah, dress appropriately. Straight to a hotel/leisure time its jeans, sneakers, hat, hoodie. Though I have traveled in pajama bottoms. Because this country has gone to the dogs already. Might as well join them and I am already pissed off at humanity anyways when I am flying so I promise what others think is the last thing on my mind.

Ordinary people didn't go out in public in pajamas or athletic gear. More affordable and accessible air travel has very little to do with people being trashy slobs.

The dress of people back then on airplanes also has nothing to do with "More affordable and accessible air travel " today.

The people flying today would have never even THOUGHT of flying back then.

One thing I've learned on this thread is that there are a LOT of ****ing snobs on F16.

**** all y'all. I will wear whatever I want to. I may even sit next to you in First or Business wearing shorts and a t-shirt and tennis shoes. And couldn't possibly give less of a **** about your opinion of me.

I'm nice to the flight crew, from the gate to the plane. They're always nice back to me. It's not about my superficial clothing, it's about how I treat them.

I'm not changing this model. It's worked for me for years, even on long international flights.

I'm not the one telling others what their dress code should be on an airplane they may not even be on...

I'm also not the one telling people how to dress. Except when I said don't dress fat, and I stand by that.

**** you. I'm fat. I'll dress however I want. I like comfortable.

If wearing a 3 piece suit and long coat like Gregory Peck makes you comfortable - awesome.

If wearing stretchy shorts, a tshirt and tennis shoes makes you comfortable - awesome.

Typically golf shorts and a quarter zip. Or sweatpants and a long sleeve tee.

Always wear slide sandals and socks

I dress for comfort

I'm the guy who wears shorts and a t-shirt in first class when I can get away with it. I'm the customer. I'm not trying to impress anyone on the flight.

This. After flying back and forth to Europe* for work enough times to nearly always get bumped up on any flight, I stopped caring about anything other than being comfortable. I'm watching mediocre movies I didn't care to pay in theaters, eating mediocre food, breathing recycled air, but supposed to dress like I'm in a damn country club? Nope. Y'all wear your polos and pressed jeans. I'll be in sweat pants and a hoodie.

*Not intended as a brag. Imagine flying into DFW with intense jet lag and immediately going to an industrial park in Weatherford for the next week, multiple times per year. That was my equivalent experience.

Jeans or khakis and a polo shirt. You can dress decently and still be comfortable.

No tank top or flip flop for men, tank top should only be worn if one is playing basketball
