Today is Weird History with a short but entertaining rundown on foods Americans ate during the Depression (1929 to approximately 1939). The government came out with economical recipes to help stretch food dollars, such as substituting Ritz crackers and cider vinegar for apples in making pies (there was even an apple shortage during the Depression) but being the government, many of these recipes were bland and unappetizing.
