"Seems," "feels," "just a feeling." Great analysis from a guy in tech.

Fact: if you start with 5 million, spend less than 200k a year, and get a very modest 4% return a year, you'll have more money than you started with 10 years later. If you get 5-6% a year (not even very aggressive assumption) and keep the spending to a measly 150-175k a year, you'll have substantially more than you started with a decade later (like you could easily grow your wealth by a million dollars despite burning 150k a year).

Anybody who isn't a spendthrift can retire at any time with 5M and live a very comfortable life. I don't care if you're 20. Yachts and 7k square feet houses are out, but you can travel, go to nice restaurants, service a decent sized mortgage, and still grow your principal with that starting amount.

I have zero doubt social security will be around when I retire. I also have zero doubt it will be restructured so that I don't get it

according to the google...

So 1 in 20 Americans is a Millionaire? Sounds pretty attainable to me.

Also seems like a community of university educated professionals in a rapidly growing economy like Texas would be particularly well suited to be overrepresented in that particular societal echelon.

What's the problem?
The problem is people debating whether $10-$15m is "enough". If you can't live comfortably with a net worth in the top 1% of the country, you are doing something very wrong.

What are you talking about? I just assume that all of us are just like the OP. You know, graduated and bought a $500k house which he paid off in 6 months, then went to buy a BMW and was informed that he'd already paid it off on the way to the dealership, which was such a pleasant surprise that he took the salesman out for mimosas before going on our daily 10k walk where they just laughed and laughed and laughed.

House I paid off in 8 YEARS. Can't you read?
The BMW I paid off in some 10 months or so. I had already made a largish down payment. On the house I scraped together 20% down.

Yep, no debt.

If you were actually worth anywhere close to 15M you wouldn't be asking this question on a web forum.

Are most of you who talk about passive income referring to rental properties?

Having any property someone else parts to use would qualify. Rental property, Airbnb, Turo, a stable of hoars, etc.

I think rental props make sense in hot RE markets. West Coast, Austin etc. Not in other markets, might as well put the money in index funds.

I am no where close to 15M but I just might get there by the time I am 60 or so. Doing reasonably well overall. I just want to know after what point I think I could "relax" and not worry about retirement.
