Why is the Beaumont/Orange/Port Arthur area such a dump?

Driving through the area looks like Mogadishu. I don't get how that area has so many high paying plant jobs and it still looks bad.

Anyone want to explain this to me?

I think Beaumont has the potential to be a nice city.

Because the folks that actually make the real big money in the plants either, don't live there, or don't stay for long. Lots of 60-80 k jobs in the plants, but that doesn't go so far when you have 6 kids by 3 women, 8 pit bulls, a 40k Polaris Ranger and a new f250 with ridiculous exhaust pipes and truck nutz.

Even though it has high paying plant jobs, the kinda people those jobs attract are not the best.

To be fair, the truck nutz don't typically cost a lot.

Those folks live in Lumberton or Vidor.

This also applies to the Permian Basin. Also meth.

A lot of those folks live in the Mid-County areas of Port Neches or Nederland. Several from Bridge City or Lumberton areas as well. Port Arthur is a straight up dump.

I had a professor at A&M who was from Long Island get up and grand stand about how it's the most miserable place he's ever been too.

He was up for tenure that year and I heard no one voted for him.

No clue what his name was. Really terrible person.

In my opinion it is due to a stagnant mentality.
Generally speaking, people don't look to move there, and there aren't any jobs that bring in people with different cultures, values and viewpoints, so the redneck, "Dilligaf," mentality permeates Orange and Hardin Counties, and Jefferson isn't that far behind.

The truly high paying jobs (>$100k) at most plants and refineries are only being made by a small portion of the overall workforce. Tenured operators, site supervision, and highly skilled technicians tend to do well. However, there are a lot of less desirable trades like scaffold builders, civil hands, and boilermakers who tend to bring in anything from $15 to $35 per hour. The upper end of that isn't bad, but you're not getting rich off it either. Plus you could be laid off for several weeks out of the year or more. Just because a guy says he works at Exxon or Motiva doesn't mean he's bringing in piles of cash. He could be shoveling petroleum coke out of a pit for $18/hr. However, that same guy will work 6 weeks of 7/12s during a turnaround and go buy a new King Ranch at the end of it. Then it'll get repossessed 3 months later when he's laid off.

Ahhh...the deer lease. Those SE Texas deer look like dogs with sticks tied to their head. I always get a laugh out of seeing the proud photos of the four point that was taken on opening day.

That's home for me. One factor that's not mentioned is the brain drain that leaves for Houston and Austin.

Outside of the petroleum industry the talent leaves town. Then so goes the money and investment. Looking at my high school class almost none of the top tier is still there.

There is an organization of about 40 folks who are all making a mil or so per year down there amd I've always been interested in what kind of homes they live in in that area.

A lot of them live just outside of the west/northwest side of town. Rice pad mansions.

Not a law firm, but I imagine they would have more sophisticated homes than the folks I know. But I guess if you practice law in the golden triangle you aren't THAT sophisticated.

Because Louisiana flooded and overflowed into Texas and infected that part of the state with trash culture.
