How long did you wait for forgiveness? Where did you go/how long to get the GPA up? B-1 83 Son is yearning to go back but has to establish something above a decimal point GPA. He's starting the process by taking some classes at SWTJC.

I failed out of UTSA, had to go to Blinn for a while, and then got into A&M.

Failing was the best thing to happen to me.

Didn't fail out but I did lose a substantial scholarship for a year. They took pity on me and put me back on the scholarship after I got my act together. It was very much a learning experience.

.273 my first semester. was out for 1.5 years - jacked around for most of that, the last summer session i decided i needed to get back into real school - took 19 hours, got a 4.0, got readmitted to A&M. graduated. went to grad school at A&M. both of my sisters failed out and returned to graduate. I think it is much harder to get back in now (i am class of 97)

i thought you were born in 83, not class of 83 with how you flirt on here.

General Studies goof off
2 semesters below a 2 point O
1.3 then 1.8.
Went to Blinn for a semester and a summer
Made a 3.75
Got Back in to liberal arts
Really nice black dean of the college
he can still feel the kiss on his a** from my mouth
You and your son need to sell your son on why it is important to be at the school
Ask what needs to be done face to face with the dean then meet the requirements

Thanks for the serious answer, Oblivious, that's the kind of stuff I was looking for. Now as for this ...

0.25 first semester in Mechanical Engineering. Wrote an appeal worthy of the Pulitzer(sp?) Prize to the Dean of the College of Engineering. They let me come back for the Spring semester with the underdstanding that I'd be taking core curriculum classes and then transferring to General Studies as soon as I had an overall 2.0. After a few semesters of 3.0s, overall GPA hit 2.5 and I snuck into the College of Business- the VERY NEXT semester they raised the transfer requirement to a 3.0! HAH! HAH!... Now three years after getting my BBA in Marketing (pretty much a degree in NOTHING) I'm heading back to start on a Masters of Architecture. Funny how stuff works out.

.25...in the words of Shelby, it looks like you were paying too much attention to one subject.

I flunked out after fall 92. Went to Blinn for Spring 93, got a 3.8, transferred back in for the fall of 93. College of Business both times, finished fall 95, BBA in Accounting.

Stop babysitting a grown man. Send him to the Army. Think of what he'll learn there. Moreover the GI Bill and Army College Fund pay over $1300/mo. They send a check as long as you're in school. AND you qualify for pell grants.

I failed out after 3 semesters after being a business major. I hated business and I guess it showed. I had a 1.3 the first semester, 2.0 the second and missed meeting my sco pro requirements by a letter grade the third semster and got kicked out. I went to Tomball for a semester and got a 4.0. I went to Blinn a semester and got a 3.75. I guess I wasn't ready for college. I got back in to A&M as a journalism major and graduated. It took me 5 1/2 years to get through school, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd still go to A&M. I'd just go to junior college for a year first.

My brother failed out twice and got back in both times. He then proceeded to fail out again.

Just to follow up w/ some of the questions...

Andyv94,
I kicked arse on the GRE. I forget the exact scores but I took it in 2000 when I was still a senior and it had the analysis portion, which I did particularly well on. Apparently I did well enough to get into the College of Architecture's Career Change Program (beginning this August). I chose "Architorture" because I know that's what I want to do. I'm a lot more mature now that I've been out in the job force for three years. I'm definitely prepared for the lack of both sleep and social life that comes with getting an architecture degree...

aggiedave and loyalag,
The 0.25 was a result of three F's and one D. It's pretty easy to do if you don't go to class and miss some exams. It's also easy to do if you don't have a clue about the whole withdrawal procedure until after the fact. My parents knew that my first semester was just one big f-up and that I'd redeem myself. I love my parents!

i remember the semester that i got a 1.9.

i was not proud...
was in the front seat of the truck with my parents, we were going to dinner. very close proximity to both parents. very scary when mom goes "so would you like to tell your dad about your grades this semester?"

i was thinking that someday i would get my mom back for that.

so i told dad that i'd gotten a 1.9 and just decided not to say anything after that.

he surprised both me and my mother by taking a deep breath and saying "Well, I was on sco-pro one of my first semesters at A&M too. You better figure out what you need to do so they don't kick you out."

One of my best friends did that. He failed out after a year, took a year off and worked, then went to JUCO for a year. He returned to A&M and had a 3.7+ GPA in the classes he took between his return and graduation - although his final A&M GPA was barely > 3.0 due to the lousy first year.

Thanks, Bob. I needed that. By the way, AMG, I am not babysitting a grown man. If he weren't working, he wouldn't be in my house. His college is essentially paid for (by my saving every nickel for 20 years) - he just needs to go.

I had a .4 after nearly a nearly perfect ACT and SAT and accepted to every school I applied to.I never went to a club, never got drunk just only went to the classes than I liked.Got A's in advanced life sciences but don't even remember what happened to some of the other ones.I was on scho pro and then suspension but I wrote a letter and was allowed scho pro again and still didn't wake up..got this really nice letter telling me thank you but I could reapply when I realized to get an education I was required to show up for class at least occasionally.

Then came three of the most wonderful kids in the world and I realized I needed to set a better example and also save for their education so I went back and aced everything except psych nursing(it's just crazy).

It is maturity that counts and if your son lacks that only he can change it.Give him a deadline and a target GPA..he makes it or he is on his own..it is amazing what the dollar sign can reach.

B-183,

Are you paying for him?

What ever happened to self-reliance? Once upon a time after 18 you were expected to be a man, i.e., go out and stake your own claim. Somehow people expect their parents to take care -- nurse -- them indefinitely. Cut the umbilical cord. The hardship and stress of independence builds character.

Instructions for re-admission

1. Send your kid to a junior college or tech
2. make him make a 3.0 or above (unless he is going into the business school or engineering or something, then 3.8 or better)
3. go talk to the advisor in the department he wants to transfer into personally.

All Right... as someone that has done what he is asking about in the last decade I can put in my $.02

I failed out after my sophmore year. I was great in highschool and just coasted thru to the end of my sophmore year at aTm (May '02). I waited 1 semester and worked (didnt go to school)(Lived by myself on my own w/o mom/dads help). I got back in to aTm for the spring 03. I did well spring 03 and summer 03. Fall 03 kicked my ass due to the fact i didnt go to class and ran Bonfire. I was almost off sco-pro at the beginning of fall 03 but when I didnt make it, I was thrown out again. At that point I shifted gears and began a Computer Network Associates degree at Blinn. I just had too many hours to recover the bad grades at aTm.

my advice... make him pay all bills and rent (just like he wasnt living at home) and then when he decides he wants to work smarter than harder, he will be ready for school again.

Let me be sure I have this right ..... I'm being chastised for saving money towards my child's college education? Yes, he is now home, but has a job and is going back to school. I refuse to let my child run up tens of thousands of dollars in loans when I have carefully invested for 20 years to help him out. That's what parents do. Granted, I paid for about half of my own college with part-time jobs/scholarships/cattle, but minimum wage part-time jobs won't begin to cover the 13K his first year at A$M cost. He has been informed that if he screws up again he will have an appointment with a recruiter of his choice.

To be continued ......

I've actually got another success example for you, B-1 83. My sister's husband went to West Point and flunked out after a year. He enlisted in the Army, fought in the first Gulf War, then went back to school and got a degree in Emergency Management from UNT (where he met my sister). He graduated with a 3.5+.

On the other hand, my wife's brother flunked out of A&M, never went back, and now he's an electrician. He does OK but has a helluva lot more potential than what he's doing.

Yes.

First dealing with the economics. You plan on spending $50k over four years and consider you've already lost 1/8 of that. What better way could this $$$ be used? retirement other investments, etc... Now about your son and debt, College is like any bus. investment like equipment; you borrow because of the payback. Are you also going to buy his house? After all a morgage is a debt.

Secondly, if you have $$$ -- and this is my belief-- $50k is better spent prepearing for college, i.e., SAT prep courses, atheltic camps, summer enrichment programs -- whatever to ensure that a student 1. gets into the best school as possible 2. Maybe has a chance for scholarship. 3. Will get the most out of college.

Finally the larger issue of responsiblity and self-reliance. Paying/supporting someone over 18 retards their growth. The hardships of being on your own BUILDS character. Knowing the safety net is gone will motivate you to work harder. Knowing that hitting rock bottom literally is the street or Star of Hope Mission will keep you up at night to study as opposed to Daddy's couch and PS2.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think that making your child live in a homeless shelter or on the street to teach them a financial lesson is a great alternative to paying for their education and even helping them out here and there after they turn 18.
