Jeebus. We ate better than that on an oil rig off the coast of Africa.. well, at least sometimes. But, at least you have veggies and some chicken you can work with. If you had your own hot sauce you could make a meal of it.

Yeah, once covid gets loose in the crew spaces of a vessel, it's game over.

Question for you, third coast -

You had to quarantine for almost a month before you could even join your ship, right? Assuming everyone on the ship has to do something similar, how the hell does the galley crew get put out of action like this?

Man, can y'all rally up some other crew members to go burn some food?

I would be trying to find someone who knew how to turn on an oven at this point.

I was wondering the same thing.

Provisions delivery is an easy path to galley exposure. Seeing the reheated frozen foods from other ships, my guess is fresh food delivery was the culprit.

Its more of a religious experience now ... complete with rituals, costumes and acts of faith.

My wife's grandfather was the lead operator on an oil platform in the Gulf for several years before retiring. He was in charge of all material requisitions which included food for the 10 or so guys on board. He ordered nothing but the best lobster, wagyu beef, and other fine foods for him and the crew. Not to mention, they also had fishing lines out most of the time catching tuna, snapper, and mahi.

I also ate very well at an oil operations center on the North Slope of Alaska. A 24hr canteen with free fresh baked cookies and donuts was a nice touch, as well.

Highly dependent on where the rig is. Was in the GOM, had blue bell, (beef) steaks, nachos, etc. got to the Black Sea and it was chicken, eggs, or water buffalo every single meal. This was for one of the largest offshore drilling contractors in the world

I'm not an offshore guy but according to my wife's grandfather the smaller rigs tended to be better food wise. The larger ones with dedicated kitchen crews were more utilitarian in nature while the small rigs bought for themselves and could bring in better food quality with less budget scrutiny. It also helps if the rig manager is a cajun or someone else who likes to eat well.

The guy had a positive nasal swab but negative serology test so they are looking at it like a false positive but as these things go, they are taking the route as prescribed in the guidance and he has to isolate while close contacts quarantine. We were already in a reduced manning situation so we are even more shorthanded. That also means I dont really have the personnel yo just throw in the galley, and quite honestly I'm not sure they could do much better. Well make some pizzas and steaks from time to time but are spread so thin we can't have someone in there all day. Galey crew works from about 0530 to 1830 to cook 3 meals a day and clean, and I just can't support that.

You're the boss??
