Suggestions for Rx sunglasses

Eye doctor told me I ought to always wear sunglasses when out in the bright sun to help prevent cataracts.

Problem is - my regular glasses eat up my vision insurance benefit so Rx sunglasses would be 100% out of pocket.

What's your best recommendation? ZenniOptical.com seems to be the cheapest by far, but I'm not sold on the sunglasses styles they have. Seems geared towards the 20 something crowd.

I ordered my dad a pair of no line bifocal prescription knock off ray bans from a guy in China and they turned out great. I think they were $60 shipped. Google Aooko.

I don't get new glasses every year. Two years ago I got new regular glasses on insurance. Then last year I got some prescription Costas on insurance. I love these Costas. Should've done this years ago.

Most Super Walmart stores have an area (usually at the front of the store) where you can try on different prescription frames and then they will send your order off to the factory. Usually takes 7-10 days to get them back. There are frames in all different price ranges. My favorite pair of prescription sunglasses came from there about 5 years ago. The frames are a no name brand, but were made in Italy and look very similar to Ray Bans.

Why are you worried about insurance? Your sight is probably your most important sense, besides common. Spend the money to do things right.

So far I've been real happy with GlassesUSA.com. I wear progressive lenses and wanted some non-progressive single vision sunglasses just for driving. Loved them so much I bought a non-shaded pair to watch TV and drive at night with.

Everybody over 50 has cataracts. Unless you can freeze time by touching your fingertips together ala Evie in Out of This World you're going to get cataracts. Your doctor wants to sell you prescription sunglasses.

I'm almost 52 and my eye doctor said nothing about cataracts when I had my last exam...

I used the frames of some of my oakley wires that I liked and sent them to one of those places online that advertise cheap RX sunglasses and had them put the lenses in. I get the transition kind. Sometimes you can get a 2 for 1 deal or half off the second pair so I'll get straight RX sunglasses with the 2nd.

Ask for your chart and see if the diagnosis is listed. If they are too small to worry about for another 10 years, they likely won't say anything.

I decided to get sunglasses when Visionworks ran one of their BOGO sales. I was due for new glasses anyway, so the second pair (sunglasses) was free.

Yep, I am 43 and my eye doctor mentioned I had the very front end of cataract development. That was quickly followed by it wasn't anything special, nothing to worry about at this time, just something to note.

Similar situation and for me one year after I got my regular glasses I tried Costco and found out it was cheaper to go through them even without insurance so now I go through them for both pairs.

I use a welding goggles instead of sunglasses. I think they offer more protection overall.
