So we have this huge cannon... can we build a plane around it? Why, yes we can !!

"Can we build a tank around it?" should have been the next question.

My dad was a back seat driver in an F4 Phantom in the late 70's. His love of jets has been passed down to me, I still run outside when I hear a jet of heavy helicopter flying around to see what it is and try to get a picture of it.

He could often tell what aircraft it was by the sound of it!

For my money, it's the F-15. Doesn't hurt that it's 104-0 in combat!

Full-on aviation geek moment, but I work out at DFW airport, and I love watching the wing flex on a 787 as it's taking off. It just happened, and it's always a cool sight

One of the most impressive flight demonstrations I ever witnessed at an airshow was by a C-17, I was amazed at how nimble it was for such a large aircraft. My father flew Sabres early in his Air Force career still his favorite of all the aircraft he flew in the military and civilian life was this less than beautiful airplane

C-130 air frame is so versatile that despite the fact that the prototype first flew 65 years ago not are they still in service, new aircraft a still being produced.

The Herc is an all time great and I would love the chance to fly it one day. Unfortunately, she's not winning many beauty contests

The C-17 is an engineering marvel. I didn't really believe the people that said it felt like you're only flying the cockpit until I actually got to fly the real thing. With the power and flight control system you quickly forget that there's about 160 feet and half a million pounds of aircraft behind you.

Fun fact. In operation Credible Sport, C-130's were outfitted with landing and takeoff assist rockets strapped to them to enable them to land and takeoff from a soccer stadium as part of a rescue mission during the Iranian hostage crisis. It ended up not being necessary, but the project would have worked. It had a successful short takeoff, but the first landing test was a failure due to pilot/engineer error on when to fire the descent assist rockets. The test bed aircraft was ready only 3 weeks after the project started (and performed perfectly), and a fully modified aircraft (the one that crashed on landing and would have been actually used) was ready 4 weeks later.

Also, the navy landed a modified C-130 on the USS Forrestal in 1963. Versatile indeed.

I watched a MiG 29 demo at Kelly AFB (might have been Randolph) back years ago. It was kick ass. Raw power. Looks like an F1 cross of an F/A-18 and an F-14.
