Not a board game but Phase 10 is awesome. It's a numbers-based strategic card game.

You just buy whatever you want regardless of what property you've landed on?
Obviously you have to land on it. Just seems a simpler way to play.
Ticket to ride is great. Easy to play and goes quick. I would also recommend a cooperative game like Forbidden Island where you work together to beat the game. Another game, my kids and I enjoy is Codenames Pictures.

Sequence is fun. Haven't seen that mentioned. We just picked it and Ticket to Ride up because we found a good deal on Amazon.

For age 8, any of these are good options.

Connect 4 Shots sounds like it should be played at Dry Bean.
