Voluntarily resigned my position, my last day is today. From what I understand, the company will pay out my two weeks, but my insurance coverage ends today. My new job requires I be employed for 30 days before being eligible for their health insurance.

What's my best option for the gap in coverage?

Sign up for COBRA immediately?
Since the gap will be less than 60 days, do I let it ride and only sign up for COBRA retroactively if something happens?
Do I look at a state insurance exchange/medishare plan?

Any advice or derision for being a lolpoor would be great. Thanks.

Could be wrong but this is always what I've done.

had no idea that cobra could work retroactively, i guess the downside is you need cash on hand for emergencies since you have to be reimbursed?

"COBRA beneficiaries have 60 days to decide whether they want COBRA coverage. If you enroll in COBRA before the 60 days are up, your coverage is then retroactive, as long as you pay the retroactive premiums. This means that if you incur medical bills during your "election period," you can retroactively and legally elect COBRA and have those bills covered."

IIRC - you can even fill out and send in all the paperwork - then just not pay premiums unless/until something happens.

I'd really reconsider that. It's a huge organization but they always seem to have leadership problems.

If you can afford premium texags you can afford to pay out of pocket for your healthcare.

I have a christian healthshare and basically pay out of pocket for everything and it is not bad when you have a young and healthy family.

Are you married, and if so, does your wife work? If she has options available, you can join her plan since this would be a "qualifying life change." Once your insurance kicks in, enroll in that if it's better and out of hers. We did that when I got laid off about 5 years ago.

If you're not married, go find some desperate chick in Vegas and then divorce her after your insurance kicks in.

I am, but she's part time and her insurance costs as much as COBRA would.

Just don't get sick or injured for 30 days.

Statistically you should be fine for 30 days. when my wife quit her job and i had to pay cobra premiums i dropped my own coverage for a year because she was pregnant and it was more important that her and our two kids had good coverage than all of us having ****ty coverage. saved us $400 a month.

it was a gamble but i figured i could afford to play the odds for a year and that extra $400 a month was huge during that transition.

Did this over the summer with the same gap and it worked out. Had to take one kid to dr during the gap and just paid the $140 out of pocket. Cheaper than the $1650/month on Cobra

Exactly what I did this year. Never paid Cobra, just kept seeing how long I could go without it. Luckily my previous company was so unorganized that that my coverage was extended a month. Had to take a child to the doctor, called ahead to ask what the no ins charge would be. $75 later was much cheaper than the $2,200 for the month I was going to pay. As mentioned before, any visit/service can be retroactivity covered once paid. Only sign up for it if needed. Went against every instinct in my body but worth keeping the extra money.

COBRA only works if the disease you get is crime.
