Got invited to play with a bunch of cool doods playing bball. I don't know how to play, but the doods gonna let me play. Only requirement is must have proper basketball shoes with non marking soles. Can't do running shoes on the court.

I went to the mall today. It was full of back to school shoppers and didn't get a chance to really see shoes. I did see several shoes in the $150 range. I am not sure if these are fashion shoes, or proper basketball shoes.

Where do I find $50 basketball shoes?

Current model, high quality shoes will cost you upwards of $100, $250 isn't out of the question. You can usually find past years' models for $50-100 online or on sale racks.

Go to academy. If you can't find the aisle with the basketball shoes, ask someone. They are sorted from most expensive on one end to least expensive on the other. Get something in the 40-60 dollar range from a brand you recognize. Anything cheaper will be uncomfortable and increase your risk of stress injury, anything more expensive is a waste of money for someone who doesn't play multiple times per week. Walk around in them a little like you would any shoe, also surreptitiously do a cut or two to make sure you don't slide side to side or forward inside the shoe. The uppers don't have to be super high, but there should be some ankle support unless you also wear ankle braces, in which case get mid-tops, they fit better with the braces. Don't get anything weird like gel insoles or chuck taylors, those are fine for walking around but not for playing sports. As long as you're there, get some compression shorts if you don't already have them.

Just wear the running shoes. If they don't like it tell them to pound sand. Running shoes don't scuff up floors.

If you can't play you at least want to look the part. You need to spend about five hundred bucks on some killer shoes. It's like me on the golf course, I can't play worth a damn, but I sure as hell look like a badass golfer.

Nike outlet or Marshall's. Should be able to get a past year model of a legit shoe for under $40.

Be careful out there. Assuming you're over 35, there's a reasonable chance of getting injured if you just jump in without being conditioned for a lot of starting/stopping/cutting/jumping.
