In the Prehistory of the Far Side, Larson had this one as one that generated a lot of hate mail from the PETA crowd. They were worried he was giving bad ideas to old, fat ladies who owned little dogs like that

In all seriousness. The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbs were glimmers of laughter in a sea of pain and darkness for the wife and I.
I will not go into detail but when we were well into a way of being pregnant with our first son there were some very scary, sad and heart breaking moments. Going to bed was a tough time. Somehow we countered by reading 30 mins of Calvin and Hobbs and the Far Side as a way to go prepare fort sleep with some humor, endless chuckles, hope and joy before we faced a new day of pain.
