Stubbed my toe a few weeks back and broke the toenail on it. Now I have an ingrown toenail from it.

Are there any home remedies that actually work? I have done the soaking in salt water thing. Trying to prevent going to the Dr to fix.

You gotta go in and dig it out.

Yep, get ready for blood and some of the more excruciating pain that life has to offer if it is an actual deep IGT. If it was injury induced may not need much tending to afterwards in regards to preventative steps taken though. So it won't come back I mean.

Good luck.

Or man up and get a pedicure. The pain is way less excruciating.
My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave.

If you kick an Irishman in the balls it fixes it.

It's a myth. All it does is make mashed taters. Though may stop one from reproducing. Doing the Lord's work at that though. Breed like roaches.

If you're wanting to stop that, kick a Mexican. One good turn at xenophobia deserves another.

Go to a podiatrist and get it checked out professionally. I had one that got too bad to take care of on my own and had to get it cut out of the side it had grown into. The pain of the shots that were injected into the infected side of the toe was just shy of making me pass out. But, never had ingrown toe nail issues since that day.

Soak it and take a few ibuprofen 15-20 minutes before you go digging on the side.

if its in the corner or on the side those are pretty simple to cut down and pull out with the right clippers. if your nail bed has shrunk and the end of the nail started growing straight into the hyponychium (thats the skin that would normally be under the free edge of the nail), youre gonna want some jack daniels before you go digging.

I had ingrown toe nails on both feet fixed by a podiatrist in one visit...only felt the shot and the pain afterwards was not bad at all for me. I would go into a doc if I were you!

Came here to say the same.

Whole E. Sht did it hurt.

But it worked - felt nothing other than pressure after that.

Had those my entire life so far. Gotta go get it yanked out.
Also, how many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman?

Go to the Doc before you get gangrene etc

As mentioned above, the only tough part is when he separates the 2 toes and sticks that 4 inch needle into that thin skin between the toes. He only has to fish it around in there for 15-30 seconds though. Then its numb and the post-surgery days are not bad at all.

Do it on a Friday afternoon

The needle under the toenail is unique, the surgical scissors with the 45 deg cut provides an arc of blood flow rarely seen once the injured nail is removed. They can be fixed permanently by surgery if they are reoccurring. Just barely beats out a sharp stick in your eye.

Had these all the time as a kid. I think being a catcher for ten years and squatting forward on my toes contributed.

Easiest thing is to go to a doctor, have them numb you up and they either cut down the side and remove just the edge, or they just rip the whole nail off.

If it's not too bad you can also do some home surgery. I used to peel off small bits of cotton, shove it under the infected edge, which lifted most of the nail up to allow for drainage and pressure relief. Slow healing process but effective.

The only thread that would be worse than this would be one about catheters.

I have been cut on 3 times for this. Once they removed a side down 1 big toenail and the other big toenail was removed completely. Well the side swipe method sucked and it came back ingrown as bad or worse than before. Next time the removed it permanently. It looks weird but I am a dude so I don't really care. The one they removed completely the first time (not permanently) came back with nail fungus but it never got ingrown so I left it alone. So basically for the last 25 years, I have had some of the ugliest feet around. But they don't hurt.

The shots to numb the area before they do the surgery may be the worst pain ever. Closely followed by the pain of removing the dry gauze from the nail bed after they have removed the entire nail.

Just remove it and be done with it.

How you ask? I know of two surefire ways:

1) Smash the toe hard enough to eventually eject the nail but not break the toe.

2) Grow it out a bit, grab the end with some vice grips, use small rope to the tie the vice grips to something sturdy and then kick back really hard.

The doctor visit doesn't hurt nearly as bad as some people are saying, I've had way worse experiences.

i have one that is very bad and I have lost it only for it to come back the same. I actually use my Dremel tool and sand the top until it becomes flexible. It doesn't hurt but go slow or it will get hot. This releases the pressure and pain. If not too severe you can cut a V in the middle and it will tend to grow together there and cause less pressure also. Originally I scraped it thin with a razor knife. I know what this sounds like but I have been dealing with this for 40 years and it does work. It only takes a couple of times a year to be pain free.
