Definitely a Mexican thing. But in a cup is a pretty popular variety as well. Personally, I like it in a cup.

Mexican street corn is awesome, though I usually mix the mayo with sour cream.

Growing up in Tyler, the squeeze butter in salsa was completely normal to me. Growing out of Tyler, I now realize that it's just not normal. However, I was at a restaurant in San Angelo a couple of weeks ago, and they had squeeze butter on the table. No idea if people were putting it in their salsa or not, but it proves that it's not a 100% East Texas thing - it may well be 99% East Texas, though.
