I'll take sharing a ride with someone who vapes over a smoker but would rather have neither.

Popcorn lungs vs tar lungs. Both are bad for you.

The jury is still out as long term studies haven't been able to be performed yet. Vaping used to be thought to be safer because it eliminated a lot of the cancer causing chemicals that naturally occur in tobacco. However we are finding that a lot of the flavorings, and other additives in vaping are just as bad if not worse carcinogens than what was in tobacco.

The take home message is this: smoking is hazardous to you're health whether you want to go high tech or all natural.

It simply helped me quit.

I was a smoker for over 10 years, got up to a pack and half a day. Within 2 years of using an e-cig I was able to go down to basically no nicotine and quit completely.,

Regarding safety, the dummy in the OP story was obviously doing something he shouldn't have been with the batteries. The vaporizer didn't blow the batteries did because he was using the wrong kind.

The article says nothing of the kind. How do you know this? And there's lots of other stories of vape pen batteries exploding. My question is, what is it about vape pen batteries that seems to make them much more volatile than other PED batteries?

I sell to thoracic surgeons and if you ask any of them, they will tell you that Capra have caused a huge increase in blebs, which are weakenings of the air sacs in the lung. They can cause pneumothorax which is basically your lung popping.

The increase has been exponential and patients are often young.

Essentially there are usually two types of failures on these devices. Usually the bad ones happen on the more advanced ones that have rechargeable batteries being used.

Example 1: the atomizer (part that is being heated up) is not the one intended to be used by that rig/setup/whatever. Too much power is poured into the thing and it will POP, but the pop is usually minor unless someone is really really pushing their luck, happened to me before using wrong resistance atomizer.

Example 2: someone is using rechargeable batteries that do not have normal safety features to shut them down when an internal failure happens due to extreme heat/pressure caused by usage outside of normal parameters. A runaway reaction occurs that causes blistering up to explosion.. I've seen one of these go, dude had the outer casing half exposed and barely got it out of the mod he was using before it started the blister. Some of the less reputable although cheaper available batteries do not have safety features

This is the correct answer. It is probably healthier than smoking because it does not heat the tissues in your mouth and pharynx and lungs as much as smoking does. However, it is still burning multiple chemicals. If you are using it to try to quit smoking, I would greatly applaud you. Otherwise, it might not be any better

There was a long-term downward trend in young people using nicotine in all forms and it is starting to skyrocket again after vaping became popular. One of the reasons is that vapor products are not regulated the same way as tobacco despite containing the same addictive substance. Tobacco products are banned from containing any artificial flavors other than menthol and are taxed to help make them prohibitively expensive. There are no such restrictions on vape liquids. They are cheap, easy to get, and taste good.

The flavoring compounds have only been tested for ingestion, not inhalation. There's no way to know the long term effect of inhaling these chemicals until much further down the road.

Nicotine itself is still dangerous even in the absence of the tar and other nasty stuff that cigarettes provide. They can cause increased heart rate, blood pressure, and irritability especially in adolescence. Most nicotine abusers started when they were teenagers.

There has been evidence supporting the use of e-cigarettes to help current smokers quit smoking. But under no circumstances should a teenager be vaping or using an ecigarette.
