Obviuously, no one pays top dollar to get an expensive suit anymore. It's not needed but every now and then. Thus, people who are smart with their money (even if money is no object) don't waste it on something like that.

But for the occasional funeral and wedding, where's the best place to get a decent suit? Even Men's Wearhouse (which used to be a good cheap place) has gotten way too expensive.

Department store? I think I got one at JC Penny's for a wedding a few years ago.

They will try to upsell you, but there are decent bargains to be had, and they will at least help you get one that fits you decently and tailor it for you.

Skip funerals and weddings and just send a gift or flowers. Problem solved.

Don't do this OP. This is not the correct answer. (Btw, Jos A Bank has been sued for overpricing their items then discounting them. There is nothing in that store worth 1000.)

As for off the rack, SuitSupply is pretty much the go to for something decent that wont break the bank. I would however, since it is right after Christmas, try some online deals of Nemians and Nordstrom. You can get some real high quality stuff for a good discount. You would need to know your suit size though.

The 2 I currently have were something like 450 for 2 on sale at men's wear house. They work for the time and are more than nice enough for my age bracket.

My next set of suits will be from the linked thread.

JCrew has nice suits. They aren't really cheap, but you just have to be patient and wait for them to go on sale.

Go to an outlet mall that has Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, J Crew, Tommy Hilfiger or a department store like Macy's. They will always have deals and you can get nice suit sets for like $100-150. K&J always has sales as well, got my last suit there.

Then take them to a tailor to get arms/legs shortened or lengthened to your exact size for a custom fit. That is only like $10-15 each.

This. I have been to Jos a Bank multiple times and never bought a suit. Their "sales" seem to be only if you buy like 3 sets for $1k and they are still more expensive and not as nice as the ones I find for cheaper at department stores.

My wife bought me a couple used tuxes off ebay (previous seasons rentals) for $20-40 each. I'm amazed at how many compliments I get when i wear them. Worst case, you're out $40.

This. Also (I know I'm going to catch some hell for this) but walk into a Caroline Herrera store front and look at their men's sale. I picked up one of my favorite suits that way and it has held up well for the last couple years. I wear a suit 2-3 times per week on average, so it stands up to a beating.

Lately, I've been really disappointed with SuitSupply. Their suits seem to have slipped in quality in the last year or so. Either that or I've been wearing them more frequently and they just don't seem to hold up as well as stuff from other places.

Outlets. Try banana republic outlet store or something similar.

Dillard's always good.

I received an email from Joseph A. Banks this morning. Clearance suits for $89 and free shipping.

Careful on the outlets. Some of the stuff there is manufactured exclusively for sale at the outlet and is not nearly the caliber of deal that it appears to be. Not saying that is the case across the board, just keep your eyes open.

Agreed. But for the use of a couple of times a year as described in the OP, it's fine.

If you know your sizes and style preferences you can order barely worn suits and jackets on eBay for stupid cheap. Then get them cleaned and tailored and your set. I have several very nice brooks brothers jackets that I bought for $20 and spent another $30 on tailor and cleaning and I was set.
