Interesting, but not sure if serious. Anyhow, a lot of his French contemporaries also had no desire for the Eiffel Tower to be built. I heard that his main motivation for building the tower was to see if it could be done. I *think* I heard that his experience with designing/building it, helped him to design the infrastructure to support the thin "skin" on the Statue of Liberty.

ETA-1: Interestingly, the Eiffel Tower also provided an opportunity for this odd/dangerous "stunt" to be attempted. Crazy, IMO.

I don't know about that one kid back in 96, but since 2008 you have to install unblockable drain covers because James Baker's granddaughter was caught in the suction of a drain and drowned.
