Do these dealerships really think people are that stupid? Example: all of the Gunn dealerships in San Antonio advertise their "one simple price" where they just post their alleged "best price" on each car, and that's what you pay. They will not negotiate.

To me, "one simple price" just means "we're ripping you off." The idea that I should trust a ****ing car dealership to be honest and give me their actual best price up front is just insulting. They must think people are complete idiots (and maybe people are idiots since these dealerships are somehow still in business).

I tried to buy a car at Gunn Infiniti a while back, and the price they wanted was absurd. I sat in there for an hour showing them listings from other dealerships and explaining that their price was too high. Like robots, they just kept repeating that this was the best price I was going to get, and I was like "no, it's clearly not, as I have shown you." They didn't budge, so I drove up to Austin and bought the same car literally for $4000 less.

I don't understand who would be stupid enough to believe that these "one price" dealerships are giving you even a remotely good deal.

still not as bad as the state.

Portland has no sales tax. I can drive down there and buy a car and pay no sales tax.
But when I try to register it in WA state, they will assess me the full WA state tax on the vehicle that has to be paid to get the plates.

1. You obviously wasted an hour trying to bargain with them. If you knew it was no haggle, you should have left
2. Some people don't like to negotiate

I don't know anything about Gunn so I have no idea if their prices are good

That's why for anything I buy digitally, my address is in Oregon.

Assuming Oregon has ultra high property taxes and income taxes to get away with this?

Once you pass over the Cascades, the rest of Washington is blood red from my understanding. From the times I've been, I get the impression that Seattle is much more of a tame liberal city than say what you'll find in the Bay or even what you'll find in Austin.

I always go into the salesman and tell them I'm shopping around and they have one shot at this. I've done my homework, so I know what a fair price for the vehicle is. If the price isn't near what I'm looking to pay, then I walk away. They had one shot. I'm getting too old to haggle over the price. The haggling comes in when we talk about all the BS fees and add-ones they try to sell with the paperwork.

You pay tax to the state that you register the vehicle in, not the state that you buy it in.

I just do it all by email. Find a vehicle I want, see what their real number is. I'm not coming to the dealership to meet, look at the car, talk to you, or for any reason besides dropping off a cashiers' check and getting the keys. The answers are all somewhere between "no" and "go **** yourself" when you try to upsell me on all of the BS fees and add-ons unless there is something that I specifically want. And if I want it, I will tell you that I want it.

Last time I was shopping, Gunn had good prices on some models. I didn't buy from there though.

That said, you apparently spent an hour trying to haggle at a business that clearly specifies that it doesn't haggle, so you may be strengthening Gunn's position regarding the mental aptitude of potential car buyers.

Really? We can say the f word but not the male sex organ clinical term?

Anyway, I tried the email method a few years ago and it failed miserably. Not one dealer replied with anything besides "come see us" and put me on all their mailing lists.

Not saying it doesn't work, though.

Bought a truck from Gunn Dodge back in the day... holdback had run out, it was a manual dually that no one else wanted... it sat on the lot for months. Their "no simple price" finally had all the bull**** priced out of it, and they gave me a lot for my trade in as they really wanted to make a deal.

So, it can work out for you if the deck is stacked in your favor. Don't expect them to negotiate if it does not. You can always negotiate on your trade if you have one.

Yeah, I did all my negotiations over email as well. Didn't step foot into the dealership until I got the car I wanted for under invoice pricing. I just don't have time have time to waste going all over Texas to different dealers. And sure, a few of them try to say 'Oh just come in and see us', or 'we don't give quotes over email', etc. , but I tell them I can't come there ahead of time due to some reason or another and most eventually play ball if they want the sale bad enough. And let's face it, you need them to want it bad enough, if you're going to successfully negotiate anyway. You should time it right with end of sales goal periods too if possible.

Yeah, don't even walk into a dealership until you have them agree to the price you want via email.

And with all the millennials and boys who have only played videos all their lives and mommy taking care of everything for them, they are too afraid and socially inept to even want to attempt to haggle with a dealership.

So, this dealer is just going to following the trends and making money of stupid people.

Autonation has a no-haggle policy. Now of course as I watched the price of car I tried to buy decrease $500 then another $400 on their website, it was obviously flexible. So it's no-haggle for Autonation, full of haggle for the customer.

Your point is that non-negotiable pricing is bad by definition and should never be used. It's not. At the right price, non-negotiable pricing makes perfect sense.

This. Bought a new vehicle last August and got it from a "one price" place which I was referred to by a retiree of that company (who was getting me a deal to begin with). I shopped around and told everyone I was doing so. The one price place was also up front about tax, title, license, etc. and gave me a nice report when I left after the first visit. Their final price (actual final price) was still way better than the "negotiated" price of other dealers even BEFORE those places had added tax, title, and license.

I say "negotiated" price at those other dealers because they interpreted my questions as negotiating when all I wanted was answers. They just kept dropping the price to try to get me to say yes to a number. Even after all of that none of them were giving me a better deal, and one place pissed me off to the point of just getting up and leaving.

You pay tax to the state that you register the vehicle in, not the state that you buy it in.
This is exactly right, I bought my truck in Mississippi and paid Texas sales tax on it when I registered it at my county courthouse.

You'll get that response of they think they have a shot at getting you in the door, and talking only to them.

Start with a round of phone calls, asking each dealer for their best price, have them send their price to you in an email (to an email address you made specifically for this). Then go all-email from there. Take the lowest number and blast it out to the other dealers asking them to beat it. Then take the lowest number from that round, and blast it out again. Make sure youre asking for "out the door" prices with all taxes and fees included. Keep going as dealers start to bow out, and stop when a dealer gives you an out the door number that none of the others will match. Go buy it.

And if that dealer tries to play games with you once you get there, you know exactly where the next lowest price is.

This isn't 1985. The internet has made all of this easy.

1) Decide on the car you want
2) Email 10 different dealerships within 25 miles asking for their best price, all-in (after taxes, after key fob charges, after EVERYTHING).
3) Take the 5 best offers and pit them against each other, letting them know the best offer will get your money at the end of the week.

The whole process takes place over a week and should take less than 30 minutes of your time. You aren't getting some car for less than what the dealership makes on it or getting one over on the sales guy and making him really mad or any of those other things that every schmuck thinks.

But you're getting a good price on a car and spending very little of your time.

The sales person may not get paid more to move a vehicle but the manager does. Always ask to discuss with the manager if you don't get a good resolution. If they have an internet sales department, go through them. They have less overhead and can usually lower the price.

So much misinformation in this thread. My father in law is the General Sales Manager at a Gunn store.

1.) they don't budge on the price. Caveat, they do reduce the price if the car sits too long but they do that so everyone can see. It's not a secret that you have to ask for. Actually have mandatory price drops at a certain days for sale. But people have walked out over $100. Some people just need to "win" which is odd to even go to a non-negotiating store to begin with
2. The salesmen do make a base salary that I was shocked at how high it is but they also make a commission when they sell cars. It's just purely quantity of cars, not related to any specific deal. Whether or not Gunn made $6k profit or $600 profit (100k or 5k car) they get the same commission.

It is an interesting model to me, if they were priced poorly, seems anybody could go to another dealer show them the Gunn price and have them beat it which I am sure happens. Lots of people don't like to haggle and maybe it's just me but it's refreshing to see the price as the price. Even if they don't budge at least it saves a trip and arguing with a salesmen/manager for 2 hours only to walk out.
