Why the turn table in my microwave changes direction every time I use it. I'm no engineer and I've always wondered why? Is it necessary to evenly heat the "food" or does it do that simply to make people wonder? I know one of the great GB minds has the answer as well as some of you with the usual whimsical responses.

Believe me, if my microwave had tits I would never leave the house, tits and a hot meal, nothing better!

Because if all of the turntables turned the same direction it would cause the Earth to tilt its axis and global warming would spiral out of control and we'd all die...duh

Do microwaves in the Southern Hemisphere turn in the opposite direction?

Probably has something to do with getting even wear on the electrical motor brushes. Just spitballing here

They do it because of the cheapness of the turntable motor. They don't force which way it goes and are random when they start, mainly because of which way it is easier to overcome the initial torque load.

If the light isnt on in the microwave and you can't see it, is the table actually spinning?

Why assume it's the turn table moving and changing directions when it could be non moving and everything else in your world is moving and changing directions.

That indicates it's off balance. Put something with some weight, like some silverware, on one side and let run for a few minutes.

This...except that it will always reverse from the previous use. The drive mechanism stops while still engaged in one direction. By reversing, the little bit of slack in the mechanism gives the motor a "running start" which reduces the required torque to get the table moving again.
