I saw an interview of a passenger on the flight, and she said it was the lady that was "sucked out to the waist, with her arms and head out of the window," that they tried to revive for 15 min, but she said it was clear that it was futile.

The window frame becomes the mold that your body is extruded thru due to the pressure differential on each side of the opening.

I'm thinking having your head out the window in 400+ mph wind (and probably -30 degrees) is the problem. Depending on how much of her was out the window she was probably thrashed against the metal fuselage until she was pulled back, which apparently wasn't immediate.

Pilots ejecting at lower speeds than that often suffer significant flail injuries even with ejection seats and protective equipment designed specifically to prevent them.

Every plane can fly on 1 engine. The housing did its job for the most part. As long as the wing doesn't rip off. The plane was fine!!

That was the first death ever of a SW passenger!

My coworker's wife is a VP at Southwest. He said the part of the plane that broke up and destroyed the window partially decapitated the woman. And then the pressure was pushing her out the window, but the passengers got her back inside. They thought it was just a heart attack, but yeah. The whole side of the plane was covered in blood.

Well that's a lovely mental image

While cruising up at 30K Ft., I usually sit there and think to myself "how bad it would be if this window suddenly broke and ripped off."

Now I know...

Guess aisle seats will now be more of a premium.

I said the same thing, but he said it was the back of her head and his wife assumed her hair/blood might have caused confusion or they might have still thought she could be saved. Not sure.

The nurse that tended to her (and based on some other accounts of what happened) made it sound like the injuries were from getting sucked out and basically slammed against the fuselage going ~500 mph / the impact of the pressure diferential.

I really don't think a piece of the engine actually hit her. It sounds like there was a delay between the engine "explosion" and the window bursting out. If a piece of the engine had hit her, it would've been instantaneous. I think the debris critically damaged the window, and a few seconds later it deteriorated enough to completely break.
