This is ridiculous. Someone made poor choices and is blaming a MLM. I happen to know a few Mary Kay ladies and I have never heard of anything like this. A few are Directors or higher level or whatever but they don't force people to spend money they don't have. Most sell a little a month to recurring customers. To most if them it's a side business. Now a few have parties, makeovers and open houses but only the really dedicated that are doing Mary Kay as their main source of income.
This scenario could happen for any MLM if you don't use your brain.
To make money on an MLM you need a product people want without having to harass your friends.
Then you need to put forth effort and be good at sales. If you aren't good at sales don't sign up and spend a few grand to buy stuff you have to sell! MLMs are all sales. If you don't do sales don't do a MLM!!!

Sorry friend who couldn't sell water to the ocean told me she's gonna sign up to sell some cleaning product MLM. I told her not too because she's not going to be good at it (several retail and similar failures already).
