We've fallen off the map in speed skating. Then with skiing, the men's has taken a dip with Bode Miller retiring and Ted Ligety getting old and injured, although his main event is still ahead. Then there are several sports we've always sucked at.

It's been difficult to invest in time to watch it. Too many commercials, talking heads, Hallmark stories and the competition has been weak by the US. Plus, no tan lines.

Fighting and running are just instinctual, biological parts of being human, something humans have always done. We later called them sports, but no one decided one day to invent running or fighting, they've just always been as long as we have been.
And some of the sports, like biathalon, were developed from military training. Not originally developed as a sport.
