Also, do your cousin a favor and get him the first four Ramones albums (he will thank you later).

I'm going to give you the kind of stuff you might find in Jim Ladd's Living Room. Stuff you're probably not going to hear on the radio except under specific circumstances. So here's a few songs from the 60s through 90s that he should give a listen to:

Surprised you didn't recommend something by Boston

When I used to live in Denver, they played "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh and "Ridin' the Storm Out" by REO Speedwagon all the damn time.

If this kid is from Texas, you need to get him some ZZ Top. Their Greatest Hits album that came out circa 1991/2 is a good overview of their stuff.
Bunk Moreland

An easy and good start might be the dazed and confused soundtrack, which would give him a variety of hits from bands back then and have some pop culture significance...

Then maybe in about 5 to 6 years you accidentally let him watch the movie "without" your knowledge.

Lots of good stuff here: Just trowing out some that haven't been mentioned and might work if he likes Boston and Van Halen. BTW, my 11 yr old loves Eruption by VH

Asia: Heat of the Moment
Def Leppard: Hysteria
Yes: Changes
Allman Brothers: Midnight Rider
Foreigner: Juke Box Hero
38 Special:Caught Up In You

I'm betting he likes guitar based of his selections. Also try some Eric Johnson

or Joe Satriani (Satch Boogie).

AiC - Down in a Hole, Rooster, Nutshell, Man in the Box

Good call on the Ramones. "Fox on the Run" is on the "Dazed and Confused" soundtrack. I was sort of building off that.

Some good suggestions here that I haven't thought about in years.

I am a little surprised that considering we're in Texas there isn't more love for Stevie Ray. Probably the greatest rock & blues guitarist of the 80's and many would argue one of the best of all time. Pride & Joy, Texas Flood, Lenny, Rude mood, etc. are good to start

I'm also a fan of CCR and surprised they only show up once above.

This got me thinking of what I consider "classic rock". To me, if the band didn't have a hit before I entered HS (1984), they don't make it. Therefore, if a group / artist didn't start before David Lee Roth left VH after "1984" or ZZ put out Eliminator (1983), they may be good but they're not classic rock. I'd be interested to hear what others think qualifies as classic rock.

Well, according to the local classic rock station here in town, Smashing Pumpkins, Sound Garden, and Pearl Jam are now classic rock. They play them all the time now. It's weird and makes me feel old.
