Was just out hiking and found a half-buried Mountain Dew can. The top had engraved explicit instructions on how to negotiate the new-fangled, non pull tab opening. My research puts it at probably 40 years old.

Any olds on here ancient enough to remember the old pull tabs that you used to break in two and then use the tab to shoot the ring across the room?

I recall those. I also recall stepping on those little *******s as a kid like Jimmy Buffett sings about.

Or the damn ring pulled off the tab and you had to find a can opener.

This is a pretty good spelling of that noise Will Smith makes at the beginning of Wild Wild West.

Yep. When I was a kid we used to make chains out of them.

I still haven't quite learned how to do that.

Old checking in.

Yup.
Those were ubiquitous in my childhood. Also glass bottles for 2 liter cokes. No plastic crap.

The real olds however are the folks that used to have to punch holes in either side of the top of the can with a can opener to drink their suds.

Those were quarts, not 2L.

I think those were 1L. Either way, you had those plus the 10 oz bottles you had to return to get your deposit back.

The quarts existed too but I was talking about the 2 liter bottles....

Yep. The cans were made of steel and the bottles were returnable 16 oz. glass 8-packs. The soft drink aisle was always sticky from someone catching a carton on a bottle cap and pulling a second entire carton onto the floor.

Important safety tip: If you put a glass Coke bottle into the freezer in an attempt to chill it, don't forget about it. I earned the privilege of cleaning the freezer several times as a kid because of that.

Damn you like to argue. Those go back to at least the 70's and that's the decade I was talking about.

I still do it with Topo Chico bottles at least once per year.

It's one thing to clean a mess up when a frozen can or plastic bottle bursts, it's quite another when you gotta search the freezer for glass shards while cleaning up the mess.

Just to put a point on it....a quick Google search shows they were made from 1977-1978.

The quarts go back further. First hit for a quart Dr Pepper was 1971.

Coke appears to have introduced plastic in 1978... so the glass 2L was a 1 year thing.

As a kid I was not good at opening cans with the stupid pull ring. Breaking off the pull ring with a small hole the soda would dribble out of, yeah I could do that all day long.

also don't put a redstripe in your freezer ice bucket (to get colder even faster) then forget about it and make a glass of ice water... the "crushed ice" feature on the dispenser works just as well with glass

Ice cold, straight outta the freezer Gatorade bottle (back when it was in bottles) set down on a sizzling, El Paso in July hot concrete dugout floor. The explosion was impressive.

Put a bottle of merlot in a freezer too long and you get a glass filled snow cone covered in fermented grape syrup.

Oh look at me. The wine I drink comes from a bottle instead of a cardboard box.
