i've been everywhere man.


midland, odessa, killeen, weslaco, edinburg, brownsville, laredo, eagle pass, cleveland, victoria, huntsville,harlingen, del rio. all insanely worse than San Angelo.

the place kinda exploded around 2010 and got a lot of good food options.


ETA: on food stuff, Zero One Ale House, Francos Mexcian Cafe, Twin Mountain Steak House, Cork and Pig Tavern.

To do, there is a riverwalkish thing and a lake if you want to run or ride around. Angelo State is a pretty little campus if sight seeing is your thing. They have 2 or 3 golf courses. I can't remember the name (looked it up, Quicksand Golf Course,) but the one on the East part of town was well rated and the one in downtown was dirt cheap. i think the other one is a country club.

Angelo State grad here...

San Angelo, though still in West Texas, is kind of the last city left on your way to Midland/Odessa that the landscape doesn't look like.... well Midland/Odessa.

Probably covered in the thread already but here are some food/drink options that you could easily plug into your Google Maps on your phone:

and personal opinion here... Zentner's Daughter is gaaarrbage and don't go to Lowake Steakhouse (They changed management and I've heard it's just a terrible waste of time to drive out there now... just what I've heard)

• Cork and Pig Tavern - Pizza is pretty good, small bar but has TV's
• The Grill - More upscale.. good spot for brunch if you're into that kind of thing
• Twin Mountain Steakhouse - Decent spot for a steak, but I'd just go to The Grill
• Henry's (Official name is The Original Henry's Diner) - Decent enough Mexican food.. good not great
• La Chilanga - Opened after I left but my friends say it's pretty good Mexican food
• Bonsai Garden - Seriously NOTHING special here but if you want an amazing tasting meal, that's absolutely terrible for you.. order the chicken fried rice to-go
• Miss Haties - Downtown Southern food spot built in what used to be a brothel, it's more historical scenery than good food
• Fuente's Cafe Downtown - Another typical West Texas Mexican food spot

Chains are obvious..

• Rosa's Cafe - Mexican fast food, I'm from West Texas, and this stuff is like crack to us
• Steak Express - Steak dinner delivery, if you end up staying in your hotel room.. get the sirloin tips.. you're welcome
• Twin Peaks - Local San Angelo talent is super meh
• Buffalo Wild Wings - lol probably don't go here unless you're bored

Bars:

• Blaine's Pub - Was always our go-to. They'll have live music Saturday night so there'll be a small cover, it's downtown and parking sucks so you might have to circle a few times
• Fiddlestrings - Sports bar with a good outdoor patio
• The Penny Tap House - Laid-back spot, they might have live music on Sat night
• Zero One Ale House - New and downtown but have heard good things. House-brewed beer on tap
• Parrot Head - Not much special here but does have a good back patio and cheap beer, good if you go with a bigger group, not good if you go with one other person

If you like Texas Country music, JB and The Moonshine Band is playing at Midnight Rodeo on Saturday... will be mostly ASU kids and Air Force dudes trying to learn to 2-step.. they never learn.. so anyway I'd go to Blaine's if you want to hear live music and drink beer

Other downtown bars: The Deadhorse, Fat Boss, House of FiFi Du Bois, Casual Pint

If you have a companion of the female variety, stop by Eggemeyer's General Store. She will love it.

I'd say drive out to Lowake steakhouse, but I can't remember if it closed or not. I feel like I heard that it would be reopening in Rowena where the Turnrow was, but I very well could have been dreaming.

You could drive 20ish miles to Eola School Restaurant and Brewery. It's pretty good (or used to be)

I don't mind San Angelo.

Angelo reminds me just a little bit of College Station, circa 1995.

If you're an outdoors enthusiast, you've got
fishing opportunities nearby.

- Lake Nasworthy (Never fished it myself. Heard mixed reviews. Local guy with YouTube channel has pretty good bank fishing results. Reputation as a "party lake" but I imagine that's mostly in summer.

- OC Fischer - this is within San Angelo State Park. Wouldn't waste time fishing there but the park has a trail system for hiking and parts are open to archery hunting right now with an APH permit. Walk-in only. I might be hunting there this weekend.

- Lake Spence - 35 minute drive from SA. Badass fishing lake. Big bass and scenic west Texas landscape.

Kinda outdoors - The Outdoorsman - Outdoors store mainly geared towards rifle and archery hunting, plus a good selection of handguns and high quality clothing/gear with some crazy sales at times. If I make it to SA this weekend, I'm gonna buy a new rifle there. Great place.
