Do people actually use "peepaw" and "meemaw" today?

yes, but only when referring to private parts.

Here in East Tennessee, 99.99% of the natives refer to their grandparents as "Mamaw" and "Papaw." And that's from the under-educated, born-up-in-the-mountains individual to the college-educated UT graduate.

Some of my family members dictated to their children what redneck names their grandchildren should use to address them by.
And in Austin, I worked with a lady who was an A&M Grad, had her P.E. license and went by "Cissy" instead of whatever her Christian name was.
In my family, it's strictly a way to increase your redneck street cred amongst your redneck peer group who also work at "The Plant".

My brothers step kids labeled my mother "maw maw" & I can't stand it. She embraced the moniker so my kids use it too, but I cringe when they say it.
I'd much rather them use "grandma" like normally civilized people, but that's not in the cards it seems.

As a grandparent, I could care less what my grand kids call me. I'm just happy to be alive to see them grow up.

Yes, people still use Memaw and Pepaw. It's what I have called my maternal grandparents since I could speak. I was the first grandchild and "gave" them those names.

For some reason when my mom was a kid her brother called her "Dot," and she wanted my niece to call her that to be different. Last week I was home and my cousin asked if my dad goes by "Feather." Whether he likes it or not that's his grandpa name from now on at family get togethers.

I switch to grandma and grandpa by age 7 or so out of mutual and self respect. Even as a kid, those babbly toddler names sounded unsophisticated and undignified to me.

I took a peepaw at work today.
My cousin choose "honey" for her grandma name. And then she had the nerve to get made at me when I asked her what time she went on stage.
Only have one left, but all of my grandparents were either MeeMom or PeePaw. I believe my sister who is 4 years older gave them those names, so I followed suit.
My last grandmother passed away a couple of years ago and her tombstone has her grandmother name on it, but not what my sister and I called her. It's kind of a silly thing, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't initially upset/disappointed about it.

One set of my grandparents were Memaw and Pepaw. Now my aunt and uncle's grand kids call them that. Never thought it was weird.
