$500k a year is not that much. There are a lot of things I wouldn't do for $500k.

I make more than $500K a year. This will sound stupid to you all but there isn't really a huge difference after about $250K - $300K a year in pay when it comes to quality of life. You can have a nicer house or a nicer car, but you're still able to do pretty much everything you need to do and really want to do (priority). It's nice to debate things like "do I get a Tesla or an M5", but at that income level, a lot is going to be expected of you and you really won't have time to give a crap about things like that. You will care more about taking vacations, having real friends, and having a good support network. Take it from me that success can be lonely. You all will assume I'm lying, but I am not.

As for things I wouldn't do for $500K, there are three real answers for me: 1) nothing that was truly dangerous to me and my health, 2) anything requiring working with absolute idiots, backstabbers, intense politics or jerks, and 3) anything criminal or highly unethical.

I'll add one more thing: a position where there is no way that you can succeed or it is high accountability / low empowerment. Good examples of this are working for a company with slim odds of surviving or a start-up where the founder won't get out of the way.

I don't think 500k a year would give me a vastly different lifestyle so there are a lot of things I wouldn't do.

1. Anything dangerous.
2. Anything involving sex, gay or straight.
3. Anything where I am working all the time. I average about 34 hours per week right now and would prefer to work about 28 hours per week if I could.
4. Anything where I am away from my family too much. No traveling.
5. Anything where I have to drive in Houston traffic. I guess if it paid enough I could have a driver take me to and from work.

I have a number to hit before I quit working. 500 gets me closer to that number faster than 250 but I agree about the day to day changes.

Agreed. I make a 6 figure salary but my wife makes a high 6 figure salary and she works her ass off for it. We plan on doing it for another 6 to 8 years and then quitting and moving to the coast of either Florida or south Carolina. I agree that we look forward to our vacations a lot.

There's not much I wouldn't do for that amount. Anything that involves hurting/killing another person or animal would be a no-go.

Is this a military thing because I can be bought pretty cheap too. Some of the discussions I've been a part of on the gun line..........
Probably. Grew up a gutter kid so the bar for me was already laughably low. Then after being brutalized by the green weenie for a few years all inhibitions and standards are completely dead. I am a total sloot. And I don't have enough shame to register it as a negative.

Bills gotta be paid my man! One way or another....

I come cheap. Body, mind, whatever. No soul left to sell though.

$500K annually? Yeah....Can't think of anything I wouldn't do.

One thing confirmed while standing post.....EVERYONE has a price. Mine is just stupid low.

This is exceedingly true. When Mrs. blindey and I book vacations for ourselves, family would always look at us like we were crazy for spending money and/or points for upgrades and amenities. Our professional lives can be a serious grind. When we leave for vacation, I want to be on vacation and will pay good money for amenities that maximize the quality of my time. The last thing I want to have to do is squeeze into seats 37K and L next to Cletus McFatass from Vidor who is on his way to London for the first time to see the Berkinham Palas and ride on the big farris weel thingie. I don't want to show up somewhere and have to ride a stinky train and then walk six blocks to someone's crappy AirBNB apartment. You get the idea.

Same with friends. The people that got dropped from our lives were the ones that made a big deal out of everything. Unavailable to meet up for dinner/drinks? Drama. The ones that have stuck around turn out to be pretty similarly situated. I enjoy time with them and they understand that life happens. Have to cancel plans? No big deal. Kids. Work is crazy. Whatever.

I never expected any of those things when I started working as a professional but they happened anyways.

would you give up your 20's? I have asked myself this because I feel like that is what I did (start med school 22, finished residency at 32). Don't get me wrong, in some ways I had more fun in med school and residency than I did in college, but in a lot of ways I see those years as isolated from the people that were most important to me. It was 100 hour weeks and I was not in control of my time at all. I missed too many major events (holidays, weddings, etc...) to count. I've always been close to my family and working those 40 hour shifts on Christmas or thanksgiving in a dreary ICU instead of at home with family was enough to get me down. Now, 10, 20 years later I see some pictures from these family holiday parties, or my best friend's wedding and am reminded of exactly where I was then.

Was it worth it? I'm not one to live with regret. If I had to answer it, I'd say it probably was. I have several friends that work in other fields and make in the same range as I do. They seem to have a more stressful life now than I do. I feel that I paid for this on the front end.

I realize that my response isn't really in keeping with the theme of this thread, but in a concrete way, would you have given up much of your 20's for 500k / yr job now?
