But Yes- I asked for permission. I had just turned 22 and my girlfriend was 21 at the time and was still financially supported by her parents while she was at A&M.
It is a matter of respect in my opinion. Did I technically have to ask? Probably not.
But professing my love and care of my girlfriend to my future father in law was probably the scariest and coolest moment of my life.

My husband did. They all cried.

I really don't get the difference between blessing and permission.

it's semantics. "Permission" makes it sound like the FIL or MIL have actual authority of whether you get married or not.
