Sucks.

I haven't had a potato, a pizza, fried anything, bread, pasta, English muffin, pancake, sweet tea, dessert of any kind, an apple, a banana, in 30 days. It's my future now. No matter how much I exercise, no matter how much I eat right according to the doctors, it's a fight to keep my a1c under control.

On meds or insulin? That's the only way I can keep my a1c under control nowith. I did great for 5ish years.

I feel your pain. I am 4 weeks into a new diet and new doctor. I have lost 17 pounds in the last 2 months. Doctors goal is the have me off meds and A1C under control in the next 90 days. But the diet is the pits. No sugar or starchy foods of any kind. For a person who could eat Mexican food every day it has been a huge change. My pantry and frig look completely different from a month ago. I do like my doctors goal off being off meds by 90 days. He says it's all about what we eat and don't eat. Trust me I would kill for a Whataburger right now.

I'm on metformin 500mg 2x/day.

I've been trying to eat under 1500 calories a day. Not much concern about what those 1500 calories are though. I know should think more about what I'm eating instead of just how much, but I'll start here and work on that when this gets easier. Lost 10 pounds so far!

So you aren't eating carbs. That doesn't mean you can't eat fried stuff! You just need to look at what your batter is made from and what your fry oil is.

Sounds like you're basically doing a keto diet. I love it. The occasional beer cheat weekend is typically the only time I take in enough carbs to come out of ketosis.

There's a lot of folks that have ceased being diabetic from a symptomatic standpoint by simply not eating carbs. It's great for weight lose too.

Metformin gave me full body hives. I've had better luck on glipizide er. Which is nice because it's a once a day slow release med.

Hi, I'm Kee Kee and I'm a candy-holic.It was so bad that football players used to know could rest assured I carried candy in my fanny pack, purse, or pocket. No coach, I'm still not as big as Oprah.

No joke. As is diabetes. You really have to look at the sources behind the sugar.

ETA: Sorry, I didn't check what type.

Not where I thought that story was going!

I thought we were about to learn the football players got them a little Kee Kee in exchange for a Snickers bar.

No, I just looked up metformin and realized he might have type 2.

I'm type 2. Glucose was 277 and a1c was 11 a month ago.

Now i'm 122 and 6.4

I test 3 times a day, and I've learned that exercise is key to keeping my numbers down. That's funny, because I've always exercised.

Eat steak 8 times a day. You've made it this long, you can get over this too.

My doc wants me to eat 6-9 eggs a day plus avacado and Roma tomatoes. Also do all my meats in a crock pot with water, salt and pepper and that is sbout it. Mostky green veges except for okra. And cheese is ok so that helps a bit. Plus almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. My A1C was over 10 so will be interesting to see next report. I was worried about liver and kidney function but all good. Also eye doctor didn't see any evidence of diabetes during eye exam. Only history in my family that I am aware of was an aunt. Wishing all on here the best with their struggle with this. It's been an eye opening few months. Not sure how I will handle football Saturdays at a&m now in regards to food and drink. Tailgates aren't the best in that regard.

Wasn't meant as a dig at all. Sorry if you perceived it that way. It was only meant that when people hear an adult is having issues with diabetes, they typically assume type 2. For me, people assume and tell me it can "be cured" with a healthy diet and exercise, when that is not my issue at all.

Again, sorry if it was taken the wrong way.

Do you have an Endocrinologist managing this or a PCP? Even though you tried and failed metformin due to an adverse event, I'm surprised and dismayed at the fact that a physician would put you on a sulfonylurea (glipizide).

Weight gain is notorious and risks of hypoglycemia are high with them. They also burn out your pancreas due to stimulation of insulin production. There's so many other products available and that med is probably 30 years old...there's newer stuff out there.

That's a good overall diet. Everything in moderation. Are you going to die happy or deprived?

A crazy amount of water (basically the recommended gallon) a day has helped me a bit. I think it's likely just staying hydrated and not drinking other crap.

If this is a new thing to you (diabetes), there are some pretty great cookbooks out there for diabetics. For when you get tired of the same stuff over and over.

Keep fighting the good fight

I don't drink much but water. And they now make pedialyte for grown ups and nutritional drinks. Water comes from the strangest sources.

Just live. It would be strange without y'all here.

Pcp put me on it after consulting with endo. I know the risks of burning out my pancreas, but that is happening anyways on its own, and this is a way to keep me off of insulin for now. Also, I react fairly well to it. Metformin isn't the only thing I've been on, just don't feel the need to broadcast my medication history on here.

It doesn't bother people who are afraid to ask questions. I have a good endo checking my cortisol, that sometimes interferes with other stuff.

I ain't scared.

Atkins makes some great snack bars and candies that are sugar free. Walmart and HEB carry them. There's only one drawback...they will make you have more gas than a transcontinental pipeline !
