HS Graduation parties, hosts and etiquette question

So one is asked to be a host for a high school graduation brunch at a nice restaurant in Fort Worth. Apparently what this means is that you are footing a portion of the check, proportionate to the number of hosts.

Is this the norm? It blows my mind that parents are recruiting friends to help foot the bill for lavish high school graduation parties, and I think it is tacky as hell.

Yeah, I know, Texags and etiquette don't mix but why not ask and enjoy some smartassery along with some answers.

TLDR - Don't be the first to volunteer to host a friend's high school graduation party. You are on the hook for the bill.

wait... were you asked by the parents or by a friend of the parents?

If asked by the parents, that's totally odd and inappropriate, if asked by the friend of parents, understandable and you can just say no if you don't want to participate in said hosting duties/paying for it.

Lavish hs school parties? Shouldn't it just be a bunch of kids at someone's kick ass house with zero parents...?

If they don't want BBQ or Shakespeare's in my backyard, they can eat a toad.

Sounds like they are looking for suckers.

Where I'm from, the parents throw the party, either at their home or at VFW or Koscuisko Hall, and they pay for the food and drinks. A lot of times several people will get together for a "group" party. Those that are invited get to see high school girls dressed like hoars and boys licking their chops waiting for the party to end. That's the way its done down in the country where i come from.

I would suddenly have a conflict and can no longer make it to the party.

I've had people ask to host parties at MY PLACE, and they provide all the food and drinks.
I've volunteered to host parties at my place and provided some of the food and drinks.
Every graduation party I have ever been to has been 100% paid for by the parents, as it should be. If at a restaurant, it would be advisable for the guests to provide a nice gift to the grads. But the only way I'm paying to host a dinner at a restaurant for a kid that isn't mine is if that kid doesn't have any parents.

I'll give you smartassery and the truth. Get them a house, keg, and take the keys from anyone entering. have a few chaperones with some type of recording device and appreciate how much better you were at life at that age than these millenial ****tards

This sounds ridiculous. I wonder how this conversation would even come up?

"Hi - would you help host Lauren's Graduation Party?"

"Sure - with balloons and stuff? Or you need me to drive kids around?"

"Actually - it's at the Olive Garden at.... Could you help cover cost?"

When did imposing upon other people become so socially acceptable?

Every graduation party I went to was at someone's home or maybe neighborhood clubhouse or an SPJST, and family was there, and the parents sprung for at least some of the food and a keg of beer.

I liked my parents being there because I got fairly trashed at a few of them as a minor---completely legally, and had a DD, too.

If you need a big party to celebrate graduating high school, there aren't many more landmark events in your future, except maybe a sentencing hearing.

Why the hell are other people footing the bill for your kid's graduation party. How about plan a party within your means and celebrate the accomplishment responsibly rather than commit resources you don't have for something as trivial as high school graduation.

You forgot the parole board.

Seriously, though, yeah that sounds really tacky. If parents want kid to have a graduation party, they should host and pay for it.

If they want you (who apparently has no kid in this shindig) to pay part of the hosting cost, it should be expected that you will be appropriately "thanked" with a mouth hug by an 18 year old dressed like a little strumpet.

Is graduating high school that big of a deal anymore for people that would have a big party at a nice restaurant?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
No f***ing way I would contribute, I would offer to do a party at my home and foot the bill, but no way would I ever help pay the bill at a high end restaurant that someone else wanted to do. What a total b**** move by this parent.

For some in my daughters class, graduating will be their high point. It's sad to look at sometimes.

Yes and in the small towns of South Texas where I'm from its also important that a child drive a nicer vehicle than their parents. Its not uncommon for the fine children of my humble little town to be driving brand new BMWs, Lexus' or $60k trucks while their parents drive ones that are falling apart.

small town south texas living sucks.
it's more important to have huge quinceanera or have a kid in HS than graduate, get a job, make something of yourself.
