Concealed Carry Etiquette??

If a person has a concealed carry permit, should they let you know that they are carrying when they enter your home for dinner/a party/whatever??? We have friends that have their permits and carry firearms legally and I just recently found out that they always carry when they come to our house..

NOTE: I am NOT anti gun and have no problem with people carrying if they are doing so legally.

BUT I have small children and don't necessarily trust the gun safety of an acquaintance when my kids may be playing with them or pulling up on them. For some reason it just really pissed me off when I found this out. In some cases, we have had friends from church over that we barely know/just met and I later found out that the husband took their firearm into my house.

Am I crazy? I brought it up to one of the guys and he acted like I was intolerant and had no right to restrict his right to carry...even in my own home.

Anyone ever dealt with this sort of thing before? My son's 1st bday is coming up and I know the guest list includes multiple Fathers who carry.

I wouldn't think twice about it if I found out someone was carrying in my house. I'd probably pull them aside and check out their gun.

you should pose this question to the Outdoors board. I'd be interested to see their opinions

If you see me, assume that I am carrying. And no, I won't tell you or stow it somewhere else.

We keep a lockbox by the front door. All guests' guns go in there while in the house. Or else, they don't have to be our guests.

It pisses you off that people exercise their right to bear arms?

Ha...not a woman. Charged with protecting my family though. I like to know if someone I barely know is trying to bring a firearm in.

The question is just- shouldn't you let it be known that you are carrying as a courtesy?

I mean, if the gun is holstered, what are you worried about? It isn't going to spontaneously fire. Your kid isn't going to accidentally shoot it.

You have every right to tell people they can't carry in your home.

You are also being extremely irrational.

we ask that people not bring their own firearms into our house. I know where our guns are, and I know we are competent to use them. If someone were to break into my house while i had company, the last thing i want is a guest trying to defend my house (lots of liability issues). They are welcome to leave their weapons in their vehicles, or put them in our safe until they leave.

I don't have a problem with it in my house (have small kids as well), but I believe it should be up to you as the homeowner. It's your property.

Yea you are a little crazy. I kind of understand but given the firearm is in a proper holster it won't go off. I keep mine in a kydex hybrid holster and there is no way to get anything in the trigger guard unless I pull it out..

This. The guns don't just come alive and start shooting kids. They would have to make a significant effort to swipe a concealed gun and start gunning down the house guests. As long as they keep it hidden and secured I don't see it as an issue.

This is where I'm heading. For some reason, this has just never come up until recently.

Some of these guys are not trained to use their weapons... I wouldn't want them attempting to take out an attacker.

Also- how can I be sure that the gun is properly holstered?

I'm serious- some of these guys are real knuckleheads.

If you are worried that they are too dumb to take the proper precautions while concealed carrying, I would suggest not having knuckleheads over to your house as my first deterrent.

People know I don't want them in my home. They respect my wishes for my home.

so what have they done that makes you think they're real knuckleheads. You've already admitted you didn't know any of them where carrying.

Yeah, you barely know them but you are up to date on their level of training and experience with handling firearms? I'm confused.

Yes. I ask them to leave them locked in their car.
I guess they could lie, but then they wouldn't be good friends.

do you own a gun or carry?

Your OP implies you're not comfortable with guns.

Yes. I ask them to leave them locked in their car.
I guess they could lie, but then they wouldn't be good friends then.
Nothing wrong with this. The OP just needs to make his wishes known and not expect people who carry to announce that fact.

I wouldn't have a problem with someone I knew well carrying in my house, but an acquaintance I didn't know well would bother me.

It would bother me because if the shoe was on the other foot, meaning I was invited to dinner at someone's house when I didn't know the host well, I would leave my gun in my car. Maybe it's just me, but I think that would just be good manners.

I have heard them all talking about their guns a lot. They joke a lot and don't seem to take the responsibility seriously. We attend the same church.

I also have a number of observations/reasons to believe they are not of the highest character. Why are they in my home in the first place? Good question haha they probably won't be when I tell them to leave their guns at home.

Not really the point of the thread though.

I guess I was just surprised- If I was carrying a gun, and I entered another man's home, I guess I just feel like I would ask if he felt comfortable with that- especially if he barely knew me.
