Is this a sign of getting old or am i just late to the party in discovering that restaurants cant cook any better than us normal folk? Other than whataburger, im struggling to find something that i cant cook as good as the pros do.

If Whataburger is your standard for judging what is "good food" you can cook better at home, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your ****ty tastes

Stop going to Applebee's and chilis.

Buy something that you normally wouldn't cook to get ideas. I rarely order anything I regularly cook for myself.

Restaurants that serve $50+ plates cook better than I do. However, I'm not a Texags baller trying desperately to impress women so I I choose to spend my coin on other things.

If you can't make a better burger than Whataburger, I'm surprised you figured the other part out

It's not a matter of actually being able to cook restaurant style food. It's a matter of actually wanting to.

Cooking a full meal is a pain in the a$$, might as well let someone else do it.

OP likely eats his steak medium well and his veggies from a can.

This! If money is a factor, it's expensive to get all the ingredients. It's not necessarily the meat and sides. For me I don't like buying all the herbs, spices and all the other BS that goes into sauces. Don't get me wrong, it makes a difference but I'm always stuck with all this left over crap that I will not reuse.

I don't necessarily mind the time to make the meal, I hate cleaning up the dishes. F'it, let's just go out to eat!

I love cooking and generally just plan the entire week menu and go to the store one time on the weekend. As far as going out I usually do the same as others already mentioned and order stuff I wouldn't normally make. In particular I like to get fish because I am not very good at cooking fish and I don't make it often as my teen son doesn't like it.

It's actually a matter of convenience. I can cook a better burger than McD or WB or any of them, but it takes a lot longer.

For me, cooking allows me to be left alone while husband manages kids & is a good excuse to drink wine.

The only excuse I need to drink wine is "oh hey, look! I have wine!"

Some people have a weird mental block. My dad is in his 70's and can't do anything more than pour cereal into a bowl or make a pb&j sandwich. He acts tarded about it, because in his mind I guess it's womens work.

And some people "can't cook" so people don't ask them to cook.

At a certain point it's not about following directions. Really good cooks can make their own recipes or greatly modify existing ones because they gain an understanding of how different flavors work in a dish. The food board is a great example.
