Quote:

Define "great" for me
"Great" is when something is evaluated according to a standard of excellence that is usually undefined, and applied subjectively. "Greatest" on the other hand, is a comparative evaluation, when something is measured against all others of a particular genre. One can be the greatest without actually being great. For instance, being the greatest Venezuelan hockey player of all time does not make one a great hockey player. So, with that being said, virtually any song recorded before the mid 70's would be the greatest of all time when compared to all those that came since then.

Growing up in the 60's I was a AM radio (no FM then)Top 40 radio junkie. There was no escaping Dylan's early 60's stuff like Blowing in the Wind and Like A Rolling Stone. On the radio ad nauseam.
My brother attended a Catholic Seminary for a couple of years and would usually bring home Dylan's latest album. Songs like Hey Mr, Tambourine Man and All Along the Watch Tower really peaked my interest although IMO The Byrds version of Tambourine Man is much better as is the Jimi Hendrix version of Watchtower.
I was really surprised when Dylan released Nashville Skyline in 1969. Johnny Cash, Charlie Daniels, the steel guitar master Peter Drake and a few others contributed to that album. Have had a copy of it in one form or another since. I'm not his biggest fan but that album pushed me to start listening to other real country artists like Merle Haggard and Willie and rockabilly greats Chet Atkins and Carl Perkins.

Do you like ZZ Top? George Thorogood?

Sure but Sunday Morning isn't giving me a weekly update about how they are the most iconic artists of a generation. In fact, nobody is forcing me to believe they are the greatest thing ever. They made their contribution to music as did Dylan...and everyone else who's music was mass produced.

Uh, most likely no one. He's revered as a songwriter, not a singer.

So I'm assuming you hate all rock n roll, because that description pretty much sums it up.

What is this Sunday Morning that has control over your mind so much? ZZ Top are in the RRHOF (so clearly many people think they're among the greatest ever) and all they did was rip off John Lee Hooker. Until they went pop to appeal to the masses of morons that can't understand the genius of artists like Bob Dylan.

You should listen to some Smithsonian and Lomax recordings from the delta if you believe that.

What's your point? That rock & roll did NOT come directly from the blues?

I don't hate rock and roll. I just hate Bob dylan. I think most of the hate stems from being told he's the greatest when in reality he is not.

My dad always said Dylan and Beatles are celebrated by his generation because previously they were forced to listen to this:

Nirvana and Soundgarden are celebrated by our generation because it got us away from the carryover 80's hair bands

Definitely not a troll. That's the thing about music, you either like it or you don't. I happen to not like nasal-y, whiny, crappy, music simply because everyone tells me its "great".

Define "great" for me
maybe the board will correct me, but I don't think many people actually like Dylan singing. It's his songwriting. 1000 of musicians have covered his songs across many genres. There is no denying that must mean he is pretty great. He is arguably the most covered artist ever. EVER. Come on, don't act like that doesn't mean something.

Not saggers, they're spectacular...or so I heard.

He's a great songwriter and horrible singer. Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is one of the greatest rock songs ever. Without Dylan, that song doesn't exist. And saying Dylan doesn't have talent is asinine. You can recognize talent without actually enjoying the music.

Not a big fan of his vocals (they work in some of his songs), but he wrote a lot of really good songs even if I don't necessarily agree with the political messages in some of them.

Dylan is one of those musicians that you are supposed to like, but I don't.

I listen to and purchase a lot of blues, and Amazon keeps recommending Dylan. Stop it already!

I will take Townes any day over Dylan.

Edit to add that the ad on the bottom of the page is an Amazon ad for a Dylan collection.
Stop it already Amazon!
