I never realized how many adults insist on celebrating their birthday

I know a girl who celebrated the whole month. First traveled one weekend to New Orleans. Celebrated in her home town another weekend then ended it with a trip to Vegas. All for her birthday. That's a lot of time and money being requested by her friends and family.

My 30th is coming up in a few months but I don't plan on having a party. I'll probably take a weekend trip somewhere I've always wanted to go and leave it at that. More enjoyable for me, no hassle for anyone else.

All through my 20s and into 30s, girlfriendnowwife and me, and our close circle of friends were all DINKS, so absolutely we're gonna have a good time when a bday comes around. Any gifts involved were just silly/gag gifts, and typically the good time consisted of drinking at someone's house, maybe go out to a bar. 3 of the group of about 10 all had bdays within a week in Feb. so there was something always planned.

My dad just celebrated his 65th by visiting us in Denver, and having his 3 sisters/husbands over for dinner. Lots of wine and good beer, and great time for every one.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with any of this.

This OP is an old bitter dude I guess.

I celebrate my birthday by spending a quiet evening at my house without meaningful human interaction. It's pretty wonderful.

Yeah I do find it weird when people want an entire 3 day weekend for their birthday. What's stranger to me is that everyone acts shocked that I work on my birthday. I'm turning 33...wgas. my s.o. knows that I just want a card and maybe dinner....that's about it.

Not true on either point. I've told my friends and family "don't do anything" and they usually love me enough to honor my request.

My brothers and I spent a whole weekend with our mom for her birthday this year, rented a boat took her out to the lake, took her to a fancy dinner that night.

My brother's birthday I arranged a party bought ice cream cake and funny hats and booze and gifts.

Birthdays are hella fun. However, I'd celebrate Flag Day if anyone would party with me. I don't see why anyone would say no to a chance to celebrate life and people and stuff.

Yeh see, if I tell my friends 'don't do anything for my birthday' or 'don't buy me another shot', they still do it, because they love me enough to know I actually really do want to do something on my birthday, and that I really do want that shot.

This is definitely different from the presumably narcissistic "birthday weekends" that some are complaining about. That's a great gift; it's exactly the kind of thing my mother would love.

Unless you suffer from depression or severe mood swings, most people are capable of going out and grabbing a few drinks and something to eat whenever they want. Needing special days to celebrate how awesome magical wonderful beautiful amazing you are is childish.

Uh.... I read exactly what you typed. Look at the bolded part. You said your friends DID do something for your birthday when you told them not to. That statement is not presented as a hypothetical.

I've gone to surprise b-day things for friends and that's how some like it. Doesn't bother me. I just prefer to not have a big shindig. If anything, I'd rather spend my birthday hiking alone in the mountains somewhere with a dog and gf

So you do care.

Sorry pet peeve of mine. The phrase you were looking for is couldn't care less

Both of these phrases in our language are idioms that mean exactly the same thing: that you don't care.

Pretty sure one is a correct phrase, and the other is people misspeaking.

Pretty sure he is correct and you don't understand what an idiom is.

Ok. But if that's true, I still don't understand why you'd say "don't do it" if you really want them to do it. And then being happy when they reject what you asked them to do.

I say what I mean. I guess a lot of people are used to lying to others and themselves - which is why I asked if she were a woman.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
you say it because you dont want them to go out of their way for you, and its a way to let them know that you arent expecting anything. If they do it anyways, it shows how much they truly care for you.

It must really suck to be so hated that no one has ever done anything nice for you just because they wanted to let you know they care.
