Assuming you are apply to get both cards, that would likely work. I'm not sure how stingy they are with two applications like that. You could always apply for a card in November/December, just make sure you don't hit the spend bonus until the statement released in January. The statement day is how they determine when the bonus points are earned.

Good call. Better to sign up for one of the cards this year in order to get the ball rolling. I'm trying to figure out how I can sign up for a business card. Since my job does not use a W-2, I actually think I can justify that as a sole-proprietorship???

I've actually heard of people just using their social on the application for the business card in place of the EIN and it has worked.

Get a personal and a business card.

You can use your social on the business and just sign up as a sole proprietorship.

I do a lot of work outside of my normal job, so I was able to answer the questions honestly. If you do not do something similar, you will either have to lie (I do not recommend this option), or hope they use the term sole proprietorship loosely.

Anyway, can confirm that having a personal and business card works. Got my companion pass a few weeks ago.

I technically am contract in my job so I think that would suffice as a sole proprietorship... But I can also say that I sell old antiques that I find on Craigslist, which I do a decent amount

Edit: I am looking the business card route because I assume it would be much easier to take out a personal line of credit as well as a business rather than just signing up for both the premier and plus card. I have 2 Credit Cards already, but they were acquired a year apart form each other.

Am I able to use the Southwest card to pay for rent? Is there a restriction against that? It would be the quickest way for me to rack up the necessary $2000.

Should be able to use it for anything you want, as long as Visa Credit is an accepted form of payment for whatever you are using it on. So, that would be completely up to your land lord or whoever you send your rent to.

Typically depends on your rental agreement and if your apartment complex will accept it w/o an extra % charge for using a credit card.

There are ways to pay rent with a card, but they usually run an extra 3-5% which to me isn't worth it unless you just need it to hit the threshold. I have found that AMEX holders can pay bills through Serve including mortgage.
BlueAg2003

Well, I looked on my apartment portal and it looks like there isn't even an option to pay rent with card.

If you get the business card using a SP, it is still your personal credit in play. Not sure if applying for a business card over another personal card would make any difference as far as being approved for a card goes.

I don't think the two other cards a year apart would do anything to you as long as they are being paid off on time.

Don't pay an extra fee just to get rewards... that kind of defeats the purpose.

If you REALLY need to spend x amount before a certain date, buy a s*$% ton of toilet paper or something. It will never go bad and you will use it eventually. Don't just throw away money on unnecessary fees.

I signed up in 2014 for the Plus and Premier card at the same time. Both had 50k bonus offerings if spent $2k in 3 months (total $4k in 3 months). I travel for work and like booze, so that was easy. Companion pass earned.

I just recently earned my companion pass again for 2017 (flew business select about 5-6 times this year and have about $20k in reimbursable expenses to date).

I will be cancelling my "Plus" card at the end of this year and signing up for it again in 2017 to jumpstart another 50k points for companion pass in 2018.

Also - you can use southwest point to book international travel on OTHER AIRLINES - we'll be flying to Europe round trip for about 70k points (can't use companion pass but 70k points beats the hell out of paying $1,500 for a flight).

I have the companion pass and absolutely dread not having it. With points and this pass, my gf and I have traveled to vegas, nola, san francisco, boston, and half way to hawaii for free. Theres trips planned for the rest of the year to hit up some away games and to either check out belize or mexico for a weekend.

I get what you're saying here...but if I'm going to spend the money anyways, I might as well throw it on a card that gets me free flights. I know "there's no such thing as a free lunch", but my wife and I fly a lot and the southwest card points gets me more points than just my bank of America travel rewards gets me towards flights. And it's even worth the extra $167 in annual expenses between the 2 cards. I fly to Texas once a month so if I get the companion pass for a year and a half, that's 36 one way flights(or 18 round trips) for the wife.

and financially, I don't "feel" an occasional $5 expense on toilet paper vs a monthly $300 flight for the wife. That would be an unbelievable amount of toilet paper for just the 2 of us.

Is there not a certain amount of time you have to wait after canceling? I would assume it's at least a year to keep people from taking advantage of the bonus points?

Airline credit cards are cards that earn points with a specific airline. These cards are easy to spot because they almost always have the name of an airline or airline rewards program in them.
Here are a few examples:

  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card
  • Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Credit Card
  • Gold Delta Skymiles Credit Card
  • Hawaiian Airlines World Elite MasterCard
With airline credit cards your points are owned by the airline company. The bank that issues your credit card has no control over these points once they are awarded to you.
Which means that you will NOT lose your airline miles by closing an airline credit card.

every 2 years. Now, I will start staggering my cards and cancel 1 every year. Free 50k points every year.

The last half of my comment was in reply to those who were talking about paying their rent with credit card and the possibility of an additional fee. Sorry, that was probably confusing because I replied to you.

Fine print only says to be eligible to receive bonus, you can not have received bonus in prior 24 months. No restrictions on how soon you can sign up again after canceling.

Bonus points don't apply to companion pass IIRC

right, I don't ever use the Plus card (premier has no foreign transaction fees). I literally only got it for the 50k.

I'll cancel it in September, let it flush through their system for a month or two, sign up in December and get to work.

We're on our 3rd cycle, 6th year, of the SW "churn". Wife and I alternate every 24 months as one expires and the other becomes re-eligible.

Points are through the airline/hotel. Not the credit card company - so no, you don't lose your points.

Chase just implemented a 5/24 rule - five cards in twenty-four months.

If there's a chance we won't meet minimum spends organically, we buy Visa Gift Cards at Kroger. You can either spend them down over time or liquidate via buying a money-order paid to yourself with the VGC.

First question I'm always asked is about our credit scores. We're both 800+ with over 20 cards each. Although, explaining all the accounts during our refinance last month sucked.

Purchase money orders from HEB or a grocery store with it if it's allowed. That's one way to go around you complex not accepting cards. They are ususally .50-1.00 there vs using your bank that charges a lot more.

Spoken like a true veteran. It took me multiple conversations to get the fiance on board. Her parents drilled that credit cards and debt are bad into her head, which isn't a bad thing.

She's got a credit score of 760 and thinks signing up for a card or 2 is going to "ruin her credit".

We both own cars and a house, what do we even need credit for right now? Anyways, I love that Chase and Southwest don't seem to care that people are doing this.

Hell, a buddy of mine signed up when the 50k bonus went away (they were only offering 25k at the time). He called and said "you guys were doing 50k a few months ago, can I get that? - Sure! we'll apply it"

Simple as that. I <3 Southwest.

only bonus points from being A-list of A-list preferred. Sign-up bonuses ABSOLUTELY 100% apply to Companion pass.

If you got the points credited from the Chase Southwest card, then according to their own verbiage, you should've gotten it. If you transferred the points from Chase Sapphire, then that's why.

Alright--one more question!

Can I get a SW card now and get the 50K points then get my second SW card late this year to have the second 50K points go through in early 2017? that way I'll get my 110K points early next year?

Do I just have to have a balance of 110K travel rewards points between the 2 cards at a certain point?

EDIT:
NVM, think I found my answer

"One of the key aspects of the Companion Pass is that it's valid for the rest of the calendar year in which you earned it plus the entire following calendar year. Therefore, if you earn the 110,000 qualifying points as quickly as possible in the beginning of the year, you can have 23-plus months of free companion travel. However, qualification happens on a calendar year basis, meaning that must have 110,000 qualifying points post to your Rapid Rewards account between January 1 and December 31 the counter resets at the beginning of the year."

no, you must EARN 110k in a single calendar year.

Considering signing up for this card. We have a trip in April and I want to get these points.

I'm considering this:
Day 1, I sign up. Spend the required money, get 50k points.
Day 365, sign my wife up, spend, she gets 50k points.
Day 730, I can cancel my card, and start cycle over.

So every year, one of us is getting 50k points.. now, I assume when booking flights, one account can purchase all flights for the family? So in year 1, I can buy flights for me, wife, and child using my 50k points? Then in year two, wife can buy all flights using her points, etc?

As many times as I've flown SW, for some reason I can't remember if that's how it works. Haven't flown in quite a while, so I just don't remember.

Not concerned about companion pass now, as we have two kids under 2 and so flying is at bare minimum right now.. but in 5-6 years, I may do the premier/business sign up (I have a legitimate side 'hobby') and go for it, to at least cut our flights down to 3.
